Know Yourself so That You May Know God...

Psalm 51:6 NIV
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
Where does God look? At the heart
“Grant, Lord, that I might know myself.” Augustine

Feelings point to something else

David wrote these songs that expressed how he felt...

He sang of fear and anger and joy and hope and protection.
Psalm 55:3–5 NLT
My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking.
ps 55:
And don’t we do this today in our songs? Aren’t our songs our anthem for how we feel and experience life.
Even - He is mad at God and questions God.
Do you even care about me God?
Why do you allow this to happen God?
Psalm 13:1–2 NIV
How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?
And Psalm 6
Psalm 6:3–7 NIV
My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long? Turn, Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. Among the dead no one proclaims your name. Who praises you from the grave? I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes.
Psalm 16:8–9 NIV
I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,
That last line - My heart is glad - he identifies how is feeling and his mouth vocalizes it.
David makes his diary become a song book.
I heard a story of a pastor who had an angry child. He said that it was from the very beginning. And what did he tell his child as he was growing up? Don’t be angry… Instead of saying, “Why are you angry?”
Don’t hit your sister… Why did you hit you sister?
Don’t take the toy… Why did take the toy?

It is interesting that we are trained to suppress our bad emotion and barely let trickle out our good emotion.

When we are here we let our emotion trickle out.
Can’t clap
Unless you are at a Kansas State or KU game and you let it all hang out...

The ways that we live a false-self.

Lyrics
Come out of hiding You're safe here with Me There's no need to cover What I already see You've got your reasons But I hold your peace You've been on lock-down And I hold the key 'Cause I loved you before you knew it was love And I saw it all, still I chose the cross And you were the one that I was thinking of When I rose from the grave Now rid of the shackles, My victory's yours I tore the veil for you to come close There's no reason to stand at a distance anymore You're not far from home And now I'll be your lighthouse When you're lost at sea And I will illuminate Everything No need to be frightened by intimacy No, just throw off your fear And come running to Me 'Cause I loved you before you knew it was love And I saw it all, still I chose the cross And you were the one that I was thinking of When I rose from the grave Now rid of the shackles, My victory's yours I tore the veil for you to come close There's no reason to stand at a distance anymore You're not far from home You're not far from home Keep on coming And oh, as you run What hindered love Will only become Part of the story And oh, as you run What hindered love Will only become Part of the story And oh, as you run What hindered love Will only become Part of the story And oh as you run What hindered love Will only become Part of the story Baby, you're almost home now Please don't quit now You're almost home to me, yeah Baby, you're almost home now Please don't quit now You're almost home to me, yes you are Now baby, you're almost home now Please don't quit now You're almost home to me

The ways that we live a false-self.

The ways that we live a false-self.

I am defined by what I have.
I am defined by what I do.
I am defined by my popularity.
We try to live someone else’s version of who we are...

We can’t try to be someone or something that we are not...

David couldn’t in
1 Samuel 17:37–39 NIV
The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.” Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. “I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off.
2 Samuel 6:14–15 NIV
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.
2 Samuel 6:14–15 NIV
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.
2 Samuel 6:14–15 NIV
Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

Psalm 32:3–5 NIV
When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Psalm 51:6–8 NIV
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Psalm 32:
Psalm 51:17 NIV
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
Psalm 51:
James 5:14–16 NIV
Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
James 5:14-
I am wondering if you can bring the broken you today...
Can you bring you (the broken you)
Secrets keep you sick...
