Jesus Begins His Ministry

[a] But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish.

In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

have seen a great light;

those who lived in a land of deep darkness—

on them light has shined.

After John was cast into prison, Jesus departs to Galilee.

He dwells in Capernaum by the sea in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali that the prophecy of , might be fulfilled.

The prophet Isaiah also predicted that the Messiah would live by "the way to the sea," Via Maris () and Jesus fulfilled this prophecy by living in Capernaum ().

He moved from Nazareth to the city of Capernaum, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, but more importantly, on the main highway through the land, a trade route.

During his ministry, Jesus lived in Capernaum, a small town near the Sea of Galilee.

Capernaum served as a military post for the Romans.

People from around the world could hear Jesus' message as they traveled this route.

The area was home to a variety of people, from religious zealots to pagans, and from devout to secular Jews.

Once a volcanic lake, the Sea of Galilee left large deposits of volcanic rock, or basalt, in the surrounding area.

Many people living in Capernaum were tektons (tech can), people who worked with stones.

Tekton can also be a carpenter.

Jesus was probably a tekton by trade, and his hometown of Capernaum was known for their production of basalt food processing implements.

The town of Capernaum is the location of the record of the centurion who sent a delegation of Jewish elders to Jesus requesting his slave be healed.

The elders backed up the centurions request with what statement?

He built us a synagogue , but the centurion was a gentile so how could Jesus justify honoring his request?

The temple is for all those who come to worship and honor God.

Jesus, therefore, is acting as a rabbi when he sits down to give his teaching..Notice Jesus stopped His quotation in the middle of a passage from Isaiah.

He stopped with “the acceptable year of the Lord”—which is His first advent, but He knew His coming rejection.

“The day of vengeance of our God” has to do with His second advent, and He therefore omitted it at the time.
