Last week we talked about the call of the believer to witness the truth of God’s work in their lives
1 John 1:3 NKJV
that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
We saw how Christ came and reveled to us the true nature and character of God and how that revelation has the power to change the lives of sinful man
In order to do that, a new or even old disciple of Christ needs to keep their eye on the mark
Peter warned the church that they should have a clear focus on the issues at hand!
2 Peter 3:10–13 NKJV
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
He poses the question…”what manner of persons ought you be in holy conduct and godliness”
be in - To be there, exist for, be present, be at one disposal, to be possessed by, to come into existence
The word persons is in italics so it was added for a smoother flow
the statement is “there is a great expectation from the believer because of the “new existence” or possession by Christ in Holy conduct
Conduct - anastrophase - to turn, twist, bend, steer - to yield - are you allowing the Word of God to conform you to the image of Christ?
1 Samuel 10:6 NKJV
Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.
Jeremiah 31:13–14 NKJV
“Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, And the young men and the old, together; For I will turn their mourning to joy, Will comfort them, And make them rejoice rather than sorrow. I will satiate the soul of the priests with abundance, And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the Lord.”
It speaks about an inner conversion from cursing to blessing!
In speaking to Zacharias about John
Luke 1:13–17 NKJV
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
This is an identification of the verse in Mal
Malachi 4:5–6 NKJV
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
John’s mission was to turn the hearts of the people back to God
That is our mission today
There is nothing of more eternal consequence than the souls of men!
You see our yielding to God then brings forth Godliness
Godliness isn’t absence from sin but rather the word here means - that which give good signs - that which gives a clear sign -readily recognizable
And why?
Because we are looking for and hastening - awaiting eagerly with earnest and diligence
2 Peter 3:10 NKJV
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
