Did I ever tell you all that I really have this thing for boats.
Big ones, little ones, fast ones, slow ones, big motors, little motors, and ones without motors.
I Love sailing, I just found a killer deal on a little sail boat.
I look online at the pictures and read about trips people take on sail boats.
my bucket list is to sail to the Bahamas one day on my sial boat.
But i have to have a larger boat to make that trip.
I did find one one though online, a man down in Fla has a great deal on a 50 footer.
Theres only one problem.....
well actually theres about 275.000 problems.
Could soemone here give the 275k just so i could elimnate this problem??
Ive asked a few people already, they said they didnt have it to give. I understand that, me either....
oh well, I love my boats though.
Sorry, we are in church, you came to hear about our Lord, not boats..
Lets dive in,
Turn to , verse 19 we will pickup in.
John 20:19–20 ESV
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
1920
The First day of the week, and it was in the evening.
The doors were locked. They were afraid that the Jews would come and arrest them because by now they had to have known that Jesus body was missing.
Where? in the midst of them.
The doors were locked. They were afraid that the Jews would come and arrest them because by now they had to have known that Jesus body was missing.
Jesus showed up, He stood among them.
Talk about being freaked out. Put yourself in their place, i would have been scared to death.
Luke 24:36–38 ESV
As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24
They thought they had seen a ghost. a spirit. yep… time to freak out.
But Jesus said, Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Do you ever find yourself with doubts sometimes? I do, and I dont think its a bad thing either.
Just as long as you dont allow the doubts to keep you from church, and other beleivers.
When you find doubt, this is the time to come to Jesus, not run away.
, vs 20
But Jesus stood there and said these words to them.
Peace be with you!
And then He showed them His hands and His side. You see guys, its really me, see!!
Now its ok, the text says so in verse 20, Then the disciples were glad when they saw Him.
John 20:21 ESV
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
Wait a minuite, Jesus just said that, Peace be with you.
in verse 19 he said it, Peace be with you.
Peace, Lets look at a few verses
Psalm 34:14 ESV
Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.
Paslm 34 14
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Isa
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 48:22 ESV
“There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”
What is Peace, not what but Who? Jesus
helps us.
Romans 5:1 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
My Peace I gave to you, Jesus is saying I am giving myself to you.
Isa
John 20:21 ESV
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
I am giving you me, and just as the Father has sent me I am sending you.
Now go into the world!
Take the message of Peace to the world.
I have a question?
What Kind of a message are we taking to the world?
What is the message of the church today. Is it a message of peace,
Or is it a message of bitterness, a message of anger, a message of hatered?
The night Jesus was born the message proclaimed was
Luke 2:14 ESV
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
Matthew 5:9 ESV
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Is the church today called peace makers or trouble makers?
Are we called Sons of God or are we called sones of something else?
The Church, we as Christians need to go back and be true Peace makers!
Why isnt the Church seen today as Peace Makers?
I can tell you why.
Its like my boat. You can pick any one you want. There all good boats.
But a boat is total useless unless its in the water. Then it becomes very useful.
Unless.... Unless the water gets into the boat. Then it becomes useless and dangerous!
The Church is a lot like a boat.
A Church by itsself is useless, but put the church out in the world and it becomes very useful!!!
Its not much useful untill its gets out in the world.
Then it becomes very useful.
Only one thing will render the church usless,
But if the world gets into the church it to becomes useless and dangerous!!
Why isnt the church being peace makers?
1 Tim
Hows the prayer life of the church?
1 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
Praying, thanksgiving, intercessions be made for all people,
For kings, goverment and all who are in high postions.
Whats the fruit of this?
That we may lead a Peaceful and quiet life,
dignified in every way!
Its impossible to pray for anyone then bash them.
If you dont like the ones in authority over us, thats even more th reason to pray for them!
Today, 2018 the church as a whole isnt known for this, being peace makers.
The Church has gotten pretty good at being made known for all that they are against. All kinds of rights and stuff.
I think this is the result of the church trying to do the work of the ministy in the flesh.
Jesus could see this happening as well.
Look at what He did about it. in verse 22
John 20:22 ESV
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
He breathed on them!!!! and said receive the Holy Spirit.
Now a few things happened here.
The first thing we see here is that the disciples are now saved!
I know, they walked with Jesus for over 3 1/2 years, thats right, but they werent saved yet. They didnt have their salvation yet.
Its only through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus that salvation can be possible.
When Jesus breathed on them, they were endwealt with the Holy Spirit.
Remember last week, the wage of sin is death. Thay too were seperated from God.
But through the Death and resurrection of Jesus salvation is now possible.
Just as when God breathed His Spirit into the nostrils of Adam and Adam became alive.
So too did the disciples become alive when Jesus breathed on them.
They now had Jesus living in them.
Prior to this they were only followers of Jesus.
Now they were Born Again Beleivers!
Thers a huge difference between a church goer and a born again believer!
Had God breathed new life into you?
Have you become a New Creation? or just a dedicated church goer?
If Jesus has breathed new life into you, you will want to come to church,
you will want to
worship
Bible Study
Pray
Read Hid Word
To hang with other believers
To Fellowship.
But a Church goer....
They come on Sunday, and usally spend the last 15 mins in church checking their watch.
Vs 23
John 20:23 ESV
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
Now we know we cant forgive any sins,
Mark 2:7 ESV
“Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Mark
This was a true statement, but the error on the Pharisees was that they denied the deiety of Jesus.
Only God can forgive sins.
We Cant forgive sins, but we can take the message of Peace, the Gospel of Jesus to this world and if they receive it we can assure them that their sins have been forgiven!
and if they reject the message, we can assure them that their sin remains on them.
Thomas,
John 20:24–25 ESV
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
John 20:24–26 ESV
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
The word unless is a very strong word in the Greek language.
It is a double negetive word.
a good example for you, The weather forcast was 1-2 inches of snow last night, in south Va in April 7, I said I will have to see it first.
How about this, 6 inches of Snow here in Branchville in July 4th!
Thats a double double negative, UNLESS I see it and stick my hand it it and make a snow ball and eat snow cream and it frezzes my hands a feet and i get stuck in it backing out the drive way, I still wont believ it!!
This was the language that Thomas used here.
John 20:24 ESV
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.
verse 24 tells us that Thomas wasnt with them when Jesus showed up that Sunday evening.
Look at what Thomas missed.
Me missed out!
He missed out on seeing Jesus!
What could we be missing out on when we miss Church, or when we miss Bible Study?
You might miss what Jesus has for you, What you so despratly need could be awaiting for you on a Sunday morning or on a Bible study evening.
You miss out and you already know you missed out on Worship and fellowship, but what did you miss from Jesus?
What did He have for you?
So many tell me they dont have to go to church!
They just stay at home and do church.
This is so sad people, you see the problem is that they lack the desire to come to church!
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
If you are a new creation, a Born again believer, This means that Jesus has breathed new life into you.
His ways become your ways!
He will give you the desires of your heart!
Jesus wont think like you think, You will Think Like He thinks,
what matters to Jesus will matter to you.
Eph
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Jesus loves the Church so much that He gave His life for it!
Church matters to Jesus,
Hebrews 10:25 ESV
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24 ESV
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
The Bible tells us not to forsake meeting together!
You see back in verse 19
John 20:19 ESV
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Jesus didnt go to the church to see the disciples, he went where they were gathered together.
It was their that He came into their midst!
And Thomas wasnt their, look at what he missed… Jesus
We never know what we will miss by missing coming together.
I cant tell you how many times Jesus has spoken to me through worship, through the teaching of His word, and through you all.
John 20:25 ESV
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
I can hear a message being given, oh its one from text i know backwards and forwards, inside and out.
Then the next thing I know Jesus speaks to me. WOW>>>> I Needed that so much Lord.. Thank YOU Lord!!!
but in studying this text any of us could be his twin.
Sometimes we come to a study and hear the text given and just start fumbling through our bible, drawing little stick men or worse, get the phone out and start facebooking!
All because that text is so old to me,
Its Gods Word, You do your parts and come, open your heart to receive.
I refuse to beleive that any man or woman can ever come to worship, or study seeking and desiring to receive from God that God will withhold from anyone!
Its often those times when God will really stir in my heart!
Never put God in a box, never place limitations on How or when or where the Lord will show up!
The Lord will show up when you least expect it.
Matthew 24:44 ESV
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
But yet still some will say I can just catch the recording later.
Their is a reason that tells us not to forsake the gathering together.
You can listen in later and still miss Jesus.
Its His Word, but Its his Spirit thats among us when we are together.
Its about being all together in His midst that He seems to really show up.
John 20:26 ESV
Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
Eight days,
This is the following DSunday evening, I know it says 8 days and by our time keeping method it would be monday, but its not our time card here, Its Sunday Evening again and Thomas is their this time.
I bet the disciples got him pretty good about missing Jesus.
Hebrews 10:24 ESV
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
This is why says
Hebrews 10:24 ESV
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
They had stirred up Thomas, as we should do the same.
Not beat anyone down, not to condemn anyone but to stir up, to encourage them to be with the body.
vs 26-27
John 20:26–27 ESV
Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
John 20:27 ESV
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
Jesus says, Thomas I heard exactly what you said last week, You didnt see me but I heard you!
BUSTED!!!!
Thomas didnt see Jesus, but Jesus was their and was listening.
Just like Hes listening to you and I when we are at home, at work and driving in heavy traffic and at the DMV office, Hes actually their when we are giving the infor to our tax preparer too!
He listening!
Put your finger here, Do not disbelieve, but believe Thomas!
John 20:28 ESV
Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
My Lord, My God says Thomas!!!
Thomas seen Jesus, Thomas heard Jesus, Thomas believed.
Notice something here in verse 26, the disciples were inside the room again and this time Thomas was with them.
Notice Jesus didn't go out searching for Thomas, but rather showed up next Sunday evening to the group of believers!
Its here that Thomas see Jesus!
It says in verse 24 that Thomas was a twin, no mention in the Bible of a twin, a brother or a sister, maybe its because it could be any of us as his twin.
You see doubt is normal and i think a good thing, it tells me you are examning the scriptures for yourself.
As long as you dont allow doubt to take you away fro meeting with Jesus, when in doubt run to Jesus.
Doubt has caused a people to leave and not return, it can cause a lot of struggles and questions.
Just as Jesus heard Thomas doubt and then met with him to resolve it.
Jesus will do the same for any of us.
John 20:30–31 ESV
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
The things that John wrote about in the Gospel are not everything that Jesus did, but the reason John wrote of these things is so that we may beleive that Jesus is the savior of the world, The Son of God and that by believing we can have eternal life in His Name!
Conclusion.
When we miss church or bible study we can be missing out with Jesus.
Its in Church that we learn to be peace makers and not be trouble makers.
We are commissioned and empowered to take the message of Peace to the world.
Man didn't build the church, Jesus did.
He said I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
If it had been Jesus desire for a believer to sit at home He would have made TV 2 000 years ago, instead He created His Church and it meant so much to Him that He gave His life for it.
Church is important to Jesus and it should be for obey believer.
When we have peach with God, its only then will we have peace with fellowman.
This is when we will see the world to begine to change.
Take the message of Peace/ The Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that so desperately needs it!.
That God loved the world so much that He gave His son to die in our place for our sins.
That Jesus died on the cross paying the penalty for our sins and was buried and on the third day he arose from the grave and is alive this very day.
Have you received Jesus into your heart?
Do you know without a doubt that you will spend eternity in heaven when you die?
If you would like to receive Jesus or maybe you have backslidden, and fallen away I want you to come forward as song plays so that I can pray with you.
The altar is open to anyone who would like to pray.
Im here to pray with you!
