“You can trust the Bible”

What is This?

Hold up the Bible
Hold up the Bible
This is the Bible.
It’s a Book that has 66 books that are divided into two main parts Old Testament and New Testament.
These main parts can be subdivided into more parts… I’ll share them here and we can learn more about them in future clubs times.
List Sections of the OT and NT with LIMITED commentary.
The whole Bible tells a main story… can anyone guess what that story is or tell me some of the main characters?

What is the Bible?

The Bible is God’s word.

We call the Bible a lot of different things like “Scripture” and the “God’s Word.” These are important names. The one we will focus on tonight is “God’s Word” or the “word of God.”
This expression is special.
Famous person writing you a note - would it be special if they didn’t write it themselves?
We sometimes call making a promise “giving your word.” Do you trust someone to keep their word if they have been reliable in the past? - Yes. What about if they haven’t been reliable? - No, you probably wouldn’t
So how can we trust the Bible? We can trust the bible because the Bible isn’t just true… it is truth.

The Bible is Truth

Jesus, God the Son, claimed that the Bible is truth.
John 17:17 KJV
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
This means that we can trust God’s word.

Has this ever been proven?

What shape is our planet? (allow response) Of course… it’s round.
Did you know that a long time ago people thought that the earth was flat? Yep… it’s true.
Yet the Bible all along was telling people the earth is round.
Isaiah 40:22 KJV
It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, And the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; That stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, And spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

Does It Agree with Itself?

Even though the Bible is made up of 66 books, written over more than 1500 years by more than 40 authors who worked independent of each other. Yet it agrees with it’s self completely.
There are people who make a big deal about “problems” that they find in the Bible. All of these “problems” have risen because they don’t know the bible, or haven’t studied it in it’s proper context.

Where Did the Bible Come From?

The Bible Came from God

2 Timothy 3:16 KJV
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
When this verse says the bible was “given by inspiration of God” it means that I came from God Himself. Every word of the Bible is scripture, because it came from God.

God used Men to Write the Bible

2 Peter 1:21 KJV
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
2 peter 1
2 Peter 1:20–21 KJV
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

King David wrote many of the Psalms (at least 74 from the book of psalms alone, plus those recorded in the history books). He talked at the end of his life about being used of God to write the psalms
2 Samuel 23:2 KJV
The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, And his word was in my tongue.
2 sam

Paul was used by God to write a lot of the New Testament. Paul never recorded anything like David did about how he was moved to write the words he did. But Paul’s letters to the churches show that he cared about them greatly and he wanted them to know the truth. God used what he had taught and showed to Paul and Paul’s care for these churches to move him to write these words that mean so much to us a Christians today.

Others wrote from their experience and God used them to write details they couldn’t have known without him.
There are a whole group of books written by or about the prophets. These men were given important sermons to preach for God and illustrations to use for Him. They and their scribes were very careful to make sure that God’s messages were recorded accurately.

God used His Church to Preserve His Word Through History

We have seen this throughout history.
“God has preserved the Old Testament through His people Israel, and the New Testament through His churches.” (Basics of Christianity)
1 tim
1 Timothy 3:15 KJV
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The people Paul wrote his letters to kept them and copied them and guarded them and now we have them, and can read them in english.
(Even now it is Bible believing and teaching churches that help people have an understanding of God’s word so that they can know and live the truth.)
You can trust the Bible.
Since you can trust the Bible, do you think you should know what it says about you, the world around you, heaven, and God Himself? - Yes
Since the Bible is truth we can use it to judge what is true and right in the world around us.
