Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,
2 Timothy 1:8
Therefore - connecting to previous verse
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
neglecting his preaching - do not be ashamed of the testimony - Timothy genuinely concerned about what others will think.
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

Jesus’ crucifixion - the cross in those days was for a common criminal. The testimony about our Lord - In those days, people who follow Christ who was in those cultural context a ‘loser’ not a ‘victor’.
The fruit of the testimony of the Lord gives life.
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
It is the power of God unto salvation
- not ashamed of the suffering for the sake of the Gospel.
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
Paul talking of his literal imprisonment but he is also a prisoner of our Lord - He knows who has put him in that prison. It was God’s will that he got put there.
In Eph and Philemon - prisoner of, in and for Christ.
Paul was previously imprisoning people
Positive imperative - but ‘share in suffering’
Christ suffered and Paul is suffering. Other Christians were getting martyred.
Suffering can be really a gift from God. It can also teach us and drive out pride
Have I suffered for Christ?
What is our motivation? Is it for the ‘gospel’?
It is better to suffer for doing God’s will than for evil that you do.
If suffering is for self then it’s not by the power of God or for the Gospel.
REALLY STRUGGLING
who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
‘holy calling’ - to put off sin and to put on Christ.
‘calling’ - invited
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

‘his own’ - exclusivity for the purpose of grace

God’s purpose - His Glory
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Grace - Demands thanks
before the ages began - eternity past
and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
Manifested - talking about Christ being revealed in this world
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
4 Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God.
5 Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God,
6 who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
7 Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end,
8 will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory?
9 For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory.
10 Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it.
11 For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.
12 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold,
13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.
14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts.
16 But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.
1 Peter 20-21
2 Cor 3:4-
Appearing - he was not created but rather He became flesh
who abolished death - death did not have and effect on Christ but rather made its effect on us.
6 And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. 7 And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ 8 And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. 9 Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
Death is the consequence of sin - We don’t experience the sting of death because Christ has defeated death.
Brought life -
Immortality - without end
to light through the gospel
11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, 12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.
2 Tim 1:
i was appointed - it was Gods provision and not one own will.
Which i why i suffer as i do -
I am not ashamed - becausae of “Whom i have believed”
“Whom i have believed” - believed - conviction and trust by which ma is complled to act.
Convinced
guard - keep something in the state that it is in.
until that day - judgement day
