Intro
Welcome back to the series in Romans.
We are in Chapter 8…last time we ended in verse 17 and that is where we will pick it up today.
Before that, let’s review the overall outline of the book of Romans...
Chapters 1-3 Problems of Unrighteousness…sin. Paul tells us that none of us are immune to sin.
Sin is something we all have to deal with and it is a problem.
Chapters 4-5 is a turning point where we hear about Jesus and he provided a way out.
And that he provided it even while we were still in sin.
Chapters 6-8 is where we are challenged to pursue righteousness.
The road to righteous living is not always easy as we’ll hear from our passage today.
In a few weeks we’ll make to chapter 9 where some of Paul’s themes are selection and righteousness by faith.
Up to this point Paul is helping us understand the Gospel and what it means for the world around us
Then in the last few chapters of the book of Romans, Paul challenges us to Live out the Gospel through our lives.

Suffering is inevitable, but does not compare to the coming glory
suffering started at Adam and Eve
just because we are suffering, it does not mean we are not in the will of God.
It may just be part of our journey to bringing us from bondage to freedom
Suffering has been part of humanity until now, but there is hope we need to be patient for
the entirety of creation is suffering and groaning.
firstfruits of the Spirit - the initial and continued to this day blessing of the Holy Spirit
our wait can both be eager and patient at the same time.
hope is not true hope if we already have it
Our hope is one we need to wait patiently for…doesn’t mean we don’t look for it, just means to not rush it.
The Spirit is our helper
When we are weak, He is there with us.
He provides a way for us to make it through.
The Spirit groans with us - praying for us when we don’t even know what to pray for.
The ultimate promise of good.
If we love Him, he will work all for our good.
As kids we may not have wanted to eat our veggies, but it was for our good.
We must trust his purposes and ways over our own.
In the midst of our struggles, we must remember this verse.
Joseph - Brothers hated him for the vision he got, plotted to kill him and then sold him into slavery, while in slavery was accused of attempted rape and thrown in jail.
interpreted the dream of the baker and cupbearer and the cupbearer forgot all about Joseph until 2 years later even though he promised to not forget him.
Later, he was in charge of all of Egypt’s food and his brothers, father and family came because there was a great famine.

v26-27 When in suffering, the Holy Spirit is a helper…sometimes interceding through wordless groans.
