Introduction: Architecture

When I was a kid I LOVED drawing. I wasn’t very good, but I loved doing it.
As I got older I began to draw houses and bridges and sky scrapers and I dreamed of one day designing them myself.
I had a particular love for old, red brick buildings.
So when my older brother graduated college and I got to travel to New England and be in the midst of buildings that were build Centuries ago, to say I was excited is a bit of an understatement. Because here are a few of the buildings I got to see!! SLIDES (4 then vines) They were GORGEOUS!
But it made me so mad, some of them had vines on them! Not sure if you know this, but vines deteriorate the grout in between bricks… it’s bad.
This developed in me a hatred for vines… it’s weird to say, I know, but it did…
As I grew older and began to spend more time reading scripture I came across .
SLIDES
But as I dug into these verses: SLIDES
John 15:1–5 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
John 15:5 ESV
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
When I first studied this scripture ALL I could think about was how much I hated vines and how they were destroying the architecture I loved dearly! But as I got older I stopped wanting to be an architect and got over it!
As I dug deeper I began to see the beauty of the verse and the beauty of what it means to “abide in” (see v. 5) Christ.
I began to see the beauty of a vine.
SLIDE: Vine
So if we abide in him we are a “branch” off of the “vine” of Jesus… So,

Our identity is in Christ

We are no longer our old selves. We are now a part of the Body of Christ:

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
tells us this about what happens when we are “in Christ”
1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV
27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

Our identity is in Christ

We are a part of the Body now!!

SLIDE: Grafting
1 Corinthians 12:12–14 NLT
12 The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. 13 Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 14 Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.
We are no longer our old selves. We are now a part of the Body of Christ:
SLIDE
;
But back to the vine…
SLIDE just vine
We are now a part of this beautiful vine.
We were not born into it.
We were grafted into it.
SLIDE: Grafting
When we surrender our lives to Christ, we are no longer our own, rogue, lost plant. We are now grafted into the Vine of Jesus Christ.
SLIDE
Our source of Life is now Jesus!
Our source of hope is now Jesus!
Our source of motivation is now Jesus!
We are not defined by our sin or by our temptation. We are defined by Jesus.
This is who we are now.
This is our source.
We are now grafted in to this beautify SLIDE vine to be apart of something much much more beautiful.
It’s our source of nourishment. We see this in
SLIDE
John 6:35 ESV
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
John 6
He is the only source of satisfaction.
We are now grafted in to this beautiful SLIDE vine to be apart of something much much more beautiful.
We are just one of many branches on the Vine of Jesus Christ.
VIDEO

we see this in Mark 10:28-30
We all have different family situations
different backgrounds
different situations...

Mark 10:28–30 ESV
28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.
Mark 10:29 ESV
29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel,

Our family is in Christ

We all have different family situations
Mark 10:28-
different backgrounds
different situations...
from a very early point in His ministry Jesus had a simply message:
You will have to give up things to come to Christ.
You will have to give up things to come to Christ.
But you will gain even more. Now.
SLIDE
Jesus’ primary promise is family.

We belong in community

As the video said, we were made to live in relationship, we were made to live in community. But for believers it is important to remember that...
SLIDE
Matthew 4:17 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

We are the community

SLIDE (LAST ONE ROSES)
A community made up of broken, ugly, messed up people who have turned and are heading toward Jesus.
No one has made it yet.
We get to support, help, encourage, and do this together.
Matthew 4:17
This isn’t specific to a certain group of people, this is to every. ALL, need to fully turn.
There is no “You, your struggle is X so you only need to change direction a little bit. But you, your struggle is Y so you need to change a bit more.”
If you were at the Good Friday service you heard Gary speak on this verse:
SLIDE
We all start off going the completely wrong direction. COMPLETELY. Period.
Luke 9:23 ESV
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
“deny [yourself]” doesn’t mean that Jesus just wants to add a little here and a little there… he wants a complete life change.
Repent means to turn and head the complete opposite direction.
We all start off going the completely wrong direction. COMPLETELY. Period.
