Isaiah 9:1–7 NKJV
Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, As when at first He lightly esteemed The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined. You have multiplied the nation And increased its joy; They rejoice before You According to the joy of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For You have broken the yoke of his burden And the staff of his shoulder, The rod of his oppressor, As in the day of Midian. For every warrior’s sandal from the noisy battle, And garments rolled in blood, Will be used for burning and fuel of fire. For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
[a]Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
1.Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness,[c] a light will shine. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice. They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest and like warriors dividing the plunder. For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian. The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire.
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor,[d] Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
In this passage of scripture; Isaiah speaks of a coming deliverer, a savior who would one day lead God’s people into a life of joy, peace, justice and a right relationship with God.
They were so distant from God
They were worshipping idols
Mistreating the orphan and elders, and those that were less fortunate.
They had become desensitized to the things of God,.
They were living in bondage
They were living in dark days with no light of hope in there future.
They were walking in darkness and many lived in a land of deep darkness where no light shined at all.
All of this had come about because they chose to live their way rather than God’s way
They chose to trust man rather than trusting in God.
And now there was no peace, no joy, no justice, and no one was living in right relationship with God.
pause,
you can say what you want to say; but this is where many people are today.
They live in such a way that either they or those around them experience the same thing,
no peace
no joy,
no justice
and many are not walking in right relationship with the Lord.
they are living in darkness.
John 1:5 NKJV
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John
In other words
many don’t even realize that they are walking in darkness.
the light shines and the darkness did not comprehend it.
but Isaiah speaks of a coming deliverer,
a savior who would one day lead God’s people into a life of joy, peace, justice and a right relationship with God.
and I want us to look at several important truths about the coming messiah he speaks about.
He ministered in Galilee
Matthew actually speaks of this event taking place.
Isaiah spoke about a time in the future when the messiah would minister extensively in Galilee
and in the book of Matthew actually speaks of this event taking place around 700 years later.
Matthew tells us that Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been arrested, so he left Judea and went over the Galilee and from there to the sea of Galilee.
Might not seem significant to some, but as I was reading this I noticed something that caught my attention about this.
In Galilee; which was just beyond the Jordan river; The scriptures tell us that there were so many gentiles that lived there.
and that
Now the word gentile in the context it is used here comes from the Hebrew word goyim which means , pagans who did not know the true God.
So the importance of the messiah ministering in Galilee is that Jesus didn’t come to save the righteous.
He came to save that which was lost.
When a person is lost they are living in darkness.
I don’t care how good everything looks in their life; but if an individual don’t know Jesus as savior, then that person is living in darkness.
And there is no darkness in light.
So many people that you and I know and living in darkness.
Some of your family members
Some are your friends
Some of you in here tonight are living in darkness.
Isaiah said that the time of darkness and despair will not go on forever.
The messiah was coming and he was going to minister in Galilee.
The messiah is coming and He is going to bring light into a land that is filled with darkness.
He is going to bring light into Grand Ridge middle school
He is going to bring light into Sneads High School
He is going to bring light into Marianna high school
He is going to bring light into your home
He is going to bring light into our community
Isaiah said that the time of darkness and despair will not go on forever.
And He is going to use you to do it.
"You are the light of the world--like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
New Living Translation "You are the light of the world--like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
It’s time that you let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify God in Heaven.
2. He would bring salvation and hope vs 2
The people who walk in darkness will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.
again in Matthew chapter 4, 700 years later Matthew writes and says; the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.
Isaiah wrote;  The people who walk in darkness will see a great light.
Matthew wrote and said: the people who sat in darkness have seen a great
The promises of God are yes and amen
meaning that if God said it; its gonna happened.................
3. He would expand the community of God’s people
4. He would bring peace by freeing the people
vs 4 For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders.
They were slaves to sin and they walked with heavy burdens on their shoulders
But God told them through the prophet Isaiah that: He would break the yoke of slavery.
yoke is a word that is used to describe something that is bond.
something that is in bondage,
They were in bondage to their sin
and their sin had brought burdens that caused great oppression in the land.
their sin caused darkness.
that robbed them of their joy
robbed them of their peace
does anybody know what it’s like to walked in bondage to your sin.
You want to do whats right
But you seemingly always do whats wrong.
You want to make the right decision
But every time you turn around; you made a bad one.
You want walk upright and live like you should.
but the desires of the flesh keep calling you name and you give in every time
Isaiah spoke to the people and he told them this
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His government and its peace will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
friend that day has come
and you and I have a wonderful counselor, a mighty God
He is an everlasting father and the prince of peace.
He will lead you and guide you
He will shield you and protect you
He will judge you according to His word
and He is committed to you till the end
He wont give up on you when you let Him down.
His love is everlasting
He is a good God
He’ll never let you down........
