The Bible tells us in Genesis,
We are made in the image of God.
The act of giving an ang-pow is symbolic of blessing another person.
When we look through the Bible,
We are God’s children.
God is the Giver of blessings.
God has given us dominion over animals.
Because you are God’s child God is going to bless you There is no need for you to fear the year ahead.

God blesses you with His Grace (v.1-4)
One of the greatest blessings we have received is the virtue of atonement.
When sins are so overwhelming it reaches to heaven,
It gets higher and higher, the sins are so heavy over us we get lower and lower.
But what is significant these verses here is this:
The psalmist acknowledges that God is the one who atones for the sins of mankind.
It is not man who makes the atonement.
Not even the high priest. We are helpless.
We can’t defeat our sins. We can’t escape from our sins.
It is God himself who atones for mankind.
We can run to God for refuge,
He hears our prayer for the forgiveness of sins.
There are no sins so great that a gracious God cannot defeat.
Today is Chinese New Year.
Maybe some of you have areas in your life you have not been right with God. Maybe you and your spouse quarrelled on the way to church this morning.
Both of you were shouting and losing it at each other.
You are sitting here fuming with anger and unforgiveness.
You just don’t have the mood to celebrate.
Some of you could be struggling with some area of sins in your life.
You are still addicted to gambling or you are still struggling with some secret sins.
Friends I have good news for you.
You can have a clean start again.
There are no sins so great God cannot forgive because
Jesus came and died for your sins on the cross.
Whatever sins you have
God can forgive you and atone your sins.
Today, we can celebrate Chinese New Year because God blesses you with his gift of Grace.
God blesses you with His Greatness (v.5-8)
Let me go on to my next point.
God blesses you with His Greatness.
Verse 5 mentions “awesome deeds” and “salvation”. The Jews recall God leading his people out of Egypt into the promise land and they praise Him for such an awesome deed. And God was their salvation.
Last week I was speaking to a printer. It was our first time meeting and I shared about the greatness of God. He was very keen to listen and even shared that although he is not a Christian, he is very impacted by the power of God. He shared that his cousins were former drug addicts and they were hopeless. However their lives changed and even broke free from drugs after they became Christians. He said “wow, your God very powerful.”
When you go Chinese New Year visiting later, recall the God’s awesome deeds and share it with our pre-believing friends and relatives. Remember we serve a great and powerful God. They will be blessed to hear God’s awesome deeds in your lives.
Last week I was filled with joy when I received a text message from one of the life group members in Noah’s Ark. He said his dad wants believe in Jesus. Praise God, two days ago I received a message that his dad gave his life to Jesus
Some of you are still praying for your loved ones, let’s believe 2018 is the year God is going to bless you with salvations in your homes.
Then in verses 6 and 7, it says by God’s strength he establishes the mountains and stills the roaring seas.
Maybe you don’t have the mood to celebrate Chinese New Year because of the chaos happening in your life right now.
Friends I have good news for you. In Old Testament theology, the sea is often referred to as chaos.
And so these verses symbolizes that God is powerful and sovereign over creation as He subdues the roaring seas.
If you are facing chaos, our Powerful God is going to subdue the chaos in your life.
He will give you the stability for 2018. God blesses you with His Grace and His Greatness
God blesses you with His Grace and His Greatness
God blesses you with Goodness (9-11)
Then finally, God blesses you with His Goodness.
In verses 9-10, the psalmist thank God for providing and blessing on the land.
Most Israelites were farmers during that time. They relied on God to make the land fertile so it can produce a good harvest.
This passage gives us a picture of a God is a good and skilful farmer. God loves his creation and comes down to visit and care for his creation. The river of God refers to the rain that God provides to sustain the earth and making it fruitful. The fountain of blessing comes from God. From his fullness, God dispense grain for human kind.
If your life is in need of provision, God is going to bless you with His provision.
He will meet your needs, not just survive but thrive.
In this same verse, the psalmist goes on.
God blesses the land by channelling his blessings over in the long narrow trenches and narrow hilltop.
The narrow hilltop are places that man can’t reach easily.
The long trenches and narrow hilltop depicts for us that God will channel his blessings into the soil of our heart.
He will make it tender and establishes with God’s grace. If your life is feeling dry and barren, God is going to be like the dew that rains his righteousness and refreshes you.
The climax of my message is found in this final verse 11.
[Slide] Read the verse
Now that we know that God is going to bless us with His Grace, His Greatness and His Goodness.
I want to bless you with two Chinese New Year greetings.
[Slide] The first Chinese New Year greetings is 恩(en1)典(dian3)华(hua2)冠(guan4)
It means - May you be crowned with goodness and grace
In verse 11, it says that God will crown the year with his bounty.
In Hebrew, the word crown is (ʿiṭʹ·ṭǎr·tā)
When we read the Hebrew meaning, it speaks of
God being the one who will make it happen.
It also speaks of God is going “to honor” and “to cover”
The word bounty in Hebrew is (ṭô·ḇā·ṯěʹ·ḵā)
It speaks of good things and good deed.
These are things that possess beneficial qualities and good actions God will do for you.
恩(en1)典(dian3)华(hua2)冠(guan4)
God is going to honor and cover all of you with His Grace, His Greatness and His Goodness.
[Slide] The second Chinese New Year greeting is脂(Zhi1)油(You2)满(Man3)途(Tu2)
It means – Wherever you go, your cart overflows with abundance of fats (blessings).
The cart refers to the ditches where water will flow. Imagine you are holding a cup and I keep pouring water over it, wherever you go the water is going to overflow and drip onto the paths you had walked on.
(Zhi You) speaks of the fats.
It refers to God’s abundant blessings.
For the Chinese this is very significant. I remember when I was young, my grandmother would tell me that the best part of the roast pork is the fats.
Interestingly for the Jews, the fat is significant because it is about the oil that comes from the fats and it symbolizes blessings. There is so much blessings that the oil oozes out of the fat.
And so wherever you go, God’s blessings so abundant upon you that it overflows out of your life.
With God’s blessings of His Grace, Greatness and Goodness over your life, I declare over each of you a blessed Chinese New Year with these Chinese blessings from
恩(en1)典(dian3)华(hua2)冠(guan4)脂(Zhi1)油(You2)满(Man3)途(Tu2)
