Text
Exodus 25:8–9 NKJV
And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it.
Exodus 25:40 NKJV
And see to it that you make them according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.
Exodus 26:30 NKJV
And you shall raise up the tabernacle according to its pattern which you were shown on the mountain.
Israel’s mistakes are be repeated among today’s Christians:
the "mistake”: Israel desired to be like the nations around them.
today’s Christians want to be “be like the world”
sing like the world
live like the world
dress like the world
worship like the world
Israel’s two big mistakes
They wanted to have king like the nations
They copied the way of worship of the Gentiles
Christians today want the same thing:
a system of governed by human will
a system of worship driven by human imagination
The result of Israel’s sins
Worship without God in their midst

Main Points

The Creation of the Sanctuary

How did God instruct Moses in the building of the sanctuary?
First, God gave Moses a pattern
Exodus 25:9 NKJV
According to all that I show you, that is, the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings, just so you shall make it.
Then, God required that the sanctuary be made according to a pattern shown to Moses
Exodus 25:40 NKJV
And see to it that you make them according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.
Exodus 26:30 NKJV
And you shall raise up the tabernacle according to its pattern which you were shown on the mountain.

The Purpose of the Pattern

Why make the sanctuary according to the heavenly pattern?
Exodus 25:8 NKJV
And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.

Because God wants to dwell in the midst of His people.

God’s earthly habitation is not just any man-made temple.
It must be a temple “worthy” of GOd’s glorious Presence!
God wants to dwell in the mist of His Church.
That’s why the Church must not be “man-made”!
That’s why the church be patterned after God’s habitation in heaven!
Matthew 6:7–10 NKJV
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

To show us that life was designed to revolve around God alone!

Not on earthly needs and desires...
“do not be like them (gentiles)”
“your Father in heaven knows the things you have need of...”
The heavenly patterns shows us that...
the center of living is God!
the central activity of heaven is worship!
Everyone in heaven works for the glory of God!
the beauty of heaven is holiness!
the law of heaven is the Word of God!

Acquiring the Pattern

How can we acquire the heavenly pattern?

The pattern was “shown” on the Mount

God brought Israel to Mount Sinai
God did not bring Israel through the shorter way to Canaan. The longer way brought them to the mountain so they will learn to worship God!
The longer way was only made much longer because of the people’s unbelief.
Moses alone “saw” the pattern because Israel would not come near the mountain

God brought us to “Mount Zion”

Hebrews 12:18–24 NKJV
For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. (For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow.” And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”) But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

God brought us to our Mountain

Our Mount Zion is the mystical Body of Christ, the Church
it is governed by Jesus Christ Himself,
it is where angels worship God and obey His commands,
it is where the elect of God are brought in from the world!

God “showed” us the pattern

We “see” the pattern through the Word taught and revealed to us
2 Timothy 1:13–14 NKJV
Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
Hebrews 12:24–25 NKJV
to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven,
the new covenant speaks...
do not refuse Him who speaks...
We see the pattern in the lives of God’s men!
1 Timothy 1:15–16 NKJV
This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.
Philippians 3:17–21 NKJV
Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

Conclusion

We do not need to “conform” to this world, because we have a better and more wonderful “pattern” to follow.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
1 Peter 1:13–16 NKJV
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
be sober - get self-control
rest your hope - focus on the coming grace of God!
don’t follow the world!
pattern your life to God’s holiness!
knowing that we were redeemed from the world with the precious blood of Christ!
