We’re fighting rest

We’re fighting rest
70s and 80s cocaine the party drug
2000s - energy drinks, 5 hour energy, Monster
ADHD; ADD
Movies: Lucy; Limitless
Reality - There God has designed to take a break…and to take a break with Him.
Hebrews 4:1–4 NKJV
1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest,’ ” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”;
writer is clearly looking back at the Israelites.

Major take-away: We are to learn that they didn’t learn!

You can’t divorce “Rest” from “inheritance”

“let us be careful that none of you suppose that he has missed it.”

OT word (Septuagint) parallels - directly associated with inheritance
App: You are not going to get what God has intended for you by taking drugs, expanding God set limits on your brain.
Deuteronomy 3:18–20 NKJV
18 “Then I commanded you at that time, saying: ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. All you men of valor shall cross over armed before your brethren, the children of Israel. 19 But your wives, your little ones, and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall stay in your cities which I have given you, 20 until the Lord has given rest to your brethren as to you, and they also possess the land which the Lord your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’
Deuteronomy 12:9–11 NKJV
9 for as yet you have not come to the rest and the inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But when you cross over the Jordan and dwell in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and He gives you rest from all your enemies round about, so that you dwell in safety, 11 then there will be the place where the Lord your God chooses to make His name abide. There you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, and all your choice offerings which you vow to the Lord.

Discussion
Q: What is your promise? Are you closer to it? What are you doing to make it happen?
I was battling - “Am I supposed to work my field (do my part) in or rest my in?”
God told them to work
He told them rest.
Reconciliation: Their work wouldn’t compare to what His hand would produce.

You can enter it:

If we can enter it, why don’t we?
“The works were finished from the foundation of the world”
work n. — activity directed toward making or doing something.
work n. — activity directed toward making or doing something.
We’re used to the concept that we were made, but not our jobs done.
Hebrews 4:1 NKJV
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
Heb 4:1
How will I know when I’m in “His rest”?
How do you know when you’re not? What happens physically when you’re bothered?
How do you know when you’re not? What happens physically when you’re bothered?
Q: Why would anyone continue to turn down “His rest”?
Hebrews 4:2 NKJV
For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
Hebrews 4:2
“gospel”-limited definition - salvation - “good news”
Re-read vs. 2
The non-negotiable
Q: What would keep you from entering rest?
Hebrews 4:2–3 The Message
2 We received the same promises as those people in the wilderness, but the promises didn’t do them a bit of good because they didn’t receive the promises with faith. 3 If we believe, though, we’ll experience that state of resting. But not if we don’t have faith. Remember that God said, Exasperated, I vowed, “They’ll never get where they’re going, never be able to sit down and rest.” God made that vow, even though he’d finished his part before the foundation of the world.
Q: How does it make you feel that God’s part is already done…there’s nothing else that He needs to do to finish the project?
Q: Do you need more faith, more rest or more discipline?
