Week 1 was Why I believe in God. 3 points:
He has revealed Himself in the world around us
He has revealed Himself in us
He pursues us
2nd message: Why I believe in the Bible.
There were also 3 points:
The Bible claims to be the Word of God.
The Bible can be proven through evidence
The Bible has proven to be a great source of personal and cultural change.
Last week: Why I believe in Jesus
Jesus fulfilled Prophecy
Jesus claimed to be someone worth believing in
Jesus backed up those claims with action
Jesus rose from the dead and is alive today
Why I Believe in the resurrection
1. Jesus talked about rising in 3 days.
M
Matthew
Even the Pharisees testified to Jesus saying this:
2. The Tomb was empty
Both his disciples and those that crucified him testified to the fact that the tomb where the body of Jesus was placed was empty on the third morning.
There are 4 possible explanations:
Jesus never died
Surely this is one way there would be no body…how someone could “rise from the dead”
His unconscious body placed in the tomb and he just woke up in the middle of the night, moved the very large stone by himself, surprised and overtook the guards and just disappeared.
None of that could have been accomplished by a guy would was beaten, hanging on a cross for 6 hours and stabbed with a spear.
Even if he survived that, how did he survive for 3 days in a tomb without water and food?
Jesus’ enemies stole the body
Why? Surely they would have claimed to have the body once the disciples began preaching his resurrection
They tried to do everything to stop the early church - beatings, executions…if they could have produced the body of Jesus, that would have ended it all.
Jesus’ friends stole the body
Where would they have taken it?
How did they get past the guards?
Would they have been so bold if they had taken his body?
Would they have been able to preach with such authority if it was a hoax?
Jesus rose from the dead as he claimed he would do
This is the only explanation left.
Jesus did as Jesus said he would do.
Angels provided this explanation, Witnesses saw him…he testified to this event.
3. Jesus was seen risen not only by his disciples, but also by 500 witnesses
1 Cor 15:1-
Paul would have only made this claim if he could have had someone to testify to this fact.
4. His disciples turned from discouraged and fearful to confident and bold witnesses of the resurrection.
As Jesus was arrested and tried, Peter denies Jesus 3 times…in the book of Acts chapter 2, we see Peter proclaim a bold sermon on the events that took place followed by the baptism of 3,000.
They went from hiding to boldly proclaiming Jesus and his message of repentance.
So why does the resurrection matter?
It proves Jesus’ most outrageous claim true
No one else has claimed to be able to rise after death and succeeded.
It gives validation to all of Jesus’ other teaching and claims.
It proves Jesus’ authority over death and over the consequence of sin.
