Surprise!!!
Intro
Have you ever been surprised by something obvious?
Hey, that ground sure was hard and unforgiving!
This shouldn’t have been a surprise.
Jesus told the disciples directly over three times that He would be killed, but would also rise again!
The shock and horror of the crucifixion caused Jesus’s followers to forget His hopeful prediction.
They must have been crushed by despair after the death of their Savior…But He wasn’t dead!
He has risen!
He rose from the dead almost two thousand years ago and He lives today!
He IS our hope!
He is our King!
He reigns now!
He reigns in victory!
He defeated death!
He defeated hell!
Easter morning holds the greatest gift even given to sinful humans: the hope of salvation and peace with the Father through the resurrection of His Son Jesus.
1-Misunderstanding
But He wasn’t dead!
He has risen!
He rose from the dead almost two thousand years ago and He lives today!
He IS our hope!
He is our King!
He reigns now!
He reigns in victory!
He defeated death!
He defeated hell!
At first, no one knew what was going on! (v1-2; 11-15)
Have you ever been accused of “not getting it?”
Have you ever had to suffer while someone “didn’t get it?”
20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.
12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?
Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
2-Miracle
Peter and John…(v3-10)
Oh, ok.
This makes sense.
This is a total dude reaction.
3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.
4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb.
He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.
Mary…(v16-18)
Emotional Reactions: I’m a hyper-emotional person and I react to things that way.
How about you?
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”
(which means Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
3-Message
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
4-Messiah
12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.
14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.
15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.
16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised.
