Introduction: There times in our lives when all of life and death hang on our very next words.
Words reveal our souls.
They are the sounds that give life to our emotions.
They have the power to give life or crush someone’s soul.
Words.
Imagine you’re asking the love of your life to marry you.
And after the eternity of that moment, she responds, “I guess.”
That’s pretty much worse than no.
The word you were looking for is “Yes.”
I’m pregnant.
It’s cancer.
Good job!
You’re fired.
Words are so powerful.
But what about your last words?
Our last words reveal our humanity, because they reveal what we really care about?
Today is Good Friday, where we celebrate the glory of Jesus on the Cross.
There are 7 things that Jesus said on the cross that we have recorded in Scripture.
Luke 23:
John 19:
Matthew
John
Luke 23:46Big Idea: The cross was His Plan for your Punishment
Big Idea: The Cross was God’s Plan All Along
1.
What Jesus said on the cross shows the importance of God’s Word.
The cross was planned.
And everything had to happen exactly as it was foretold.
The words of Jesus are fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy.
There was one final prophecy of the old testament left to be fulfilled from .
I don’t think there is any spiritual significance related to this the statement “I thirst.”
I’ve heard some theories.
But the truth is that God’s word is so important and so perfect that even before Jesus could say that it is finished, this final piece of God’s word had to be fulfilled.
psalms 69:29
I thirst shows the importance of God’s Word.
2. What Jesus said on the cross shows His humanity.
We get a little uncomfortable when talking about Jesus’ humanity.
There is always a human side to the cross and then there is a divine side.
There are 2 perspectives of the cross.
On the one hand, humanly speaking, the cross was a diabolic plot to silence an innocent man.
On the other hand, what man meant for evil, God meant for good.
The cross what’s God’s plan for your punishment.
On one side we have the physical suffering of Jesus as a man.
On the other hand we have the divine wrath of God poured out on His spirit.
3. The Cross is where the awesome wrath of God is reconciled by His incomprehensible Love.
Reflection: Lord’s Supper.
