Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,

Why did Christ have to suffer, die and resurrect?

The Christ Would Suffer and Die.

Surely our griefs He Himself bore,and our sorrows He carried;

Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.

6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.

Isaiah 53:

The reason Christ had to suffer was so he could experientially empathize with us.

1.

Our griefs He Himself bore - The things that we grieve over He grieved over.

When a loved one passes our hearts grieve.

He grieved over the death of Lazarus and the Bible says “Jesus Wept”.

Jesus can bear our griefs because He understands and can give us the strength to endure.

2. Our sorrows he carried - The betrayal of a friend or family member will bring us tremendous sorrow.

Jesus knew this sorrow because when He needed his friends the most they deserted Him.

They fled when He was arrested.

When we go through times of Sorrow He can carry us!

The reason Christ had to die was because of our sin

He was pierced for our transgressions - (pesa) evildoing n. — the violation of a law or a duty or moral principle.

Crushed for our iniquities (a-won) sin (act) n. — an act or feeling that transgresses something forbidden or ignores something required by God’s law or character; whether in thought, feeling, speech, or action.

But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.

21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

What is significant about the Resurrection of Christ?

What is significant about the Resurrection of Christ?

12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised;14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.

15 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised ad are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.

18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.

Christian preaching is in vain

Our Faith is in vain

We are false witnesses of God

We are still in our sins.

Because of the resurrection :Our Preaching is powerful, Our Faith brings salvation, Our witness is true and builds the Kingdom of God, Our Sins are forgiven!

What does the the death burial and resurrection of Christ mean to us personally?

and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Repentance - (Metanoia) repentance ⇔ reconsideration n. — a change of self (heart and mind) that abandons former dispositions and results in a new self, new behavior, and regret over former behavior and dispositions.

the result of the death burial and resurrection of Christ

This is an inward change that happens when the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see the sin of our heart.

It is an awakening of our soul to see the area’s of our life that grieve the Lord.

It brings conviction to the heart that demands a change.

This desire for change leads to salvation.

Repentance is not a one and done event.

It is a continuation of the Christian walk

Forgiveness - (aphesis) forgiveness (absolution) n. — a formal release from an obligation or debt; especially understood of the debt of sin.

Jesus has taken our punishment for sin on the cross and exonerates us from the eternal death that is associated with sin.

We must repent and believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that His sacrifice for us is enough.

Then we must receive it by making Him Lord of our life.

What are we to do with Christ?

Proclaim repentance and forgiveness in His name to all the nations!

How?

18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Make disciples

Baptize them - The first step of discipleship is to lead them to the Lord.

The church sometimes gets so focused on evangelism and numbers that we give up on people after they are baptized.

Sometimes people give up on Christ after they are baptized.

They say, “I’m in, so I’m done”.

Salvation is only the beginning of discipleship.

Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you - This is a lifelong process.

The way you teach is both study of the Bible, but also demonstrating obedience to the Bible to those you disciple.

Conclusion

What are you going to do with Christ this morning?

For some you may need to repent of your sins, receive Christ forgiveness, and be saved from eternal punishment.

For some you may need to be more active in proclaiming the good news.

For some you may need to start making disciples.

Whatever the Lord has laid on your heart to do this morning, will you come and commit to Him this morning your decision?
