Passage
36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to
them, “Peace to you!”
37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.
38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
43 and he took it and ate before them.
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,
47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Is there anyone here who feels like your emotions gets the best of you? Raise your hands!
If you were to say “I have no emotions” I would call you a liar!
We are emotional beings.
I want to talk to you this morning about emotions.
Specifically the emotions of FEAR and DOUBT.
I know some of you might be saying “Doubt is not an emotion.”
I was listening to a podcast where a neuroscientist said that doubt was an emotion, strongly interconnected with the emotion of disgust. He said that there were neuroimaging studies that supported this.
I think we all know FEAR! ........ BUT DOUBT ?????
To better understand what I am trying to say we need to look at the word Doubt on an emotional level.
Doubt is this indecision between belief and disbelief.
It may involve uncertainty, distrust or lack of conviction on certain facts, actions, motives, or decisions.
I want you to keep this in mind as we expound this passage of scripture.
SO LETS GET INTO THE WORD ...
Bring up to date with what has just taken place.
Jesus is sentence to die.
Taken to the cross and dies for all mankind's sin.
Defeat’s sin and death
and on the 3rd day he is resurrected (The Tomb is empty)
We know that Jesus appears to 2 men traveling.
They go tell the others.
And this is where we pick up the story found in
Body:
Get your pen’s and bibles out ..... lets take
The first thing we see, as we peer into this scene is those who were walking on the road to Emmaus and had an encounter with Jesus, is sharing this story when OUT of NOWHERE, Jesus Appears in the locked room!
He say’s, “Peace to you.” (Peace be with you.”)
Verses 37-38 Luke express the emotions/feel within the room .....
I am here to tell you this morning, in that room, these disciples were drenched in FEAR and DOUBT!
Scripture tells us they were .... “Startled” “frightened
There is a difference between startled and frightened.
But when you look at the Greek words here you see these 2 words are, to some degree, synonymous!
Frightened - (Turn the corner and see a stranger)
But when you look at the Greek words here you see these 2 words are, to some degree, synonymous!
Startled - (I left the stove on.)
Frightened - (Turn the corner and see a stranger)
Its as if Luke was saying, “.... they were startled, really startled (To a degree of “initial fear”)!”
Jesus asked, “Why are you troubled,
The Greek word here is different than what was used in verses 37.
Jesus is asking why are you deeply troubled (Deeply fearful).
Inward turmoil
Grab a person and say “Boo” to them! (They are startled.)
Now, to the same person, pull out a knife and act like you are going to cut their fingers off.
“Boo” you are startled!
With the knife, you are Deeply troubled.
You see church, John says they were startled and frightened ....
Jesus was not asking why they were startled or frightened. (By my appearance?)
He was asking why they were deeply troubled? Inward Turmoil? (Why have you been up in this room for the last 3 days scared?)
and why do doubts arise in your hearts?”
And then He ask ....
and why do doubts arise in your hearts?”
Remember what Doubt is on this emotional level .... indecision between belief and disbelief.
This is a HEART thing Jesus is addressing!
Fear and Doubt is a heart thing.
(Vs 39-43) Jesus then reassures them when in comes to their fears and doubts.
He shows them his hands and feet (The very ones that were pierced for our transgressions)
He has them touch him to feel the flesh and bones.
To help solidify this reassurance Jesus ask for a piece of fish.
He eats it right in front of them. Ghost don’t eat!
(Vs 44-49) These verses are believed, by some scholars, to have taken place over a period of time after this encounter.
Whatever the case may be, it really is insignificant to the over-all understanding of what was taking place.
(Vs 45) in this verse it says Jesus “opened” their minds to the understanding of scripture.
If you have studied the Gospels you know that up to this point Jesus has kept things secretive.
But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it.
But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it.
But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.
What was revealed?
Christ had to suffered, had to died, but on the 3rd day He was to be resurrected.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
But it doesn’t stop there church ....
(The reasoning why!) And repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in HIS name to all the nations.
This a part of the story we tend to leave out ..... repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in HIS name to all the nations
This is what we (AS BELIEVERS) are to be doing NOW!
PAUSE
SO ..... What mattered most was that the disciples needed to overcome their fear and doubt so that they could move forward in the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Climax:
As we mentioned at the beginning of our time together ..... What Jesus was dealing with was these men and women who walked with him for 3.5 years are huddled up in a room fearful and allowing doubt to creep in.
What Jesus does, is he relieves them of their fears and doubts.
You might be saying, “I have fears and doubts.”
How do I HANDLE Fear and Doubt?
How do I combat against these tools of the enemy?
How do we ?????? WE DON”T!
We allow Christ to relieve us of our fears and doubts.
We allow Christ INTO the FEARS and DOUBTS
We allow Christ to SPEAK into the FEARS and DOUBTS
We allow Christ to REVEAL TRUTH about the FEAR and DOUBT.
How does Christ do this?
How does he relieve them of their fears and doubts?
He taps into the 3 of the 5 senses (Hear, Touch, Sight, Smell, and Taste)
The first step in dealing with Fear and Doubt ....
The have to be done in this sequence in order to be affective .....
The first step in dealing with Fear and Doubt ....
Listen as He Speaks! (Sense of Hearing) (Vs 36 “Peace to You.”)
In the very midst of Fear and Doubt (As you are being drenched with it) stop and listen.
Look what took place in that room as the disciples were bathing in fear and doubt. (Vs 36)
Jesus enters the room. They don’t see him first, they hear him first!
You might be saying, “How do I hear him in the midst of Fear and doubt, “BE STILL!”
What I had found was when I had been in the midst of fear and doubt I was yappen away!
… talking the situation out .... trying to decide what I was going to do!
I would imagine this was what the Disciples were doing in the room.
Nothing happened, nothing changed ...... until Jesus Spoke!
This should be good news for us .... even when we are yappen away Christ can still be heard.
What we should be doing is “listening.”
He is calling!
He is calling!
The second step in dealing with Fear and Doubt ....
Look as He Reveals Truth! (Sense of Sight) (Vs 39 “See my hands and feet …”)
He turns their attention to something that could help drive out fear and doubt .... the scars on his hands and feet.
Proving to them he is the one who was hanging on that cross 3 days ago! (look and see)!
What Christ does is while Fear and Doubt is so overwhelming for the disciples he says, “LOOK AT ME!”
Don’t fixate on the fear and doubt! ........ EYES HERE!
As a parent, when your child was overwhelmed with a nightmare, in the middle of the night, you enter their room and you say, “Look at me, Its dad. I’m here!”
What takes place is once they see you then everything starts to settle. Relief starts to set in.
Your child remembers how you took care of the bad dream before and is reassured you will do it again.
Do you realize that in Looking at Christ what you see is all his Goodness! All of His Glory!
We are reminded of “All He has done in the past.”
And reassured then of the fact that HE WILL DO IT AGAIN.
And Finally, the Third step in dealing with Fear and Doubt is ....
Feel My Love! (Sense of Touch) (Vs 39 “Touch Me.”)
Just as your child cries out for you ..... “I’m coming (You say)”
They see you enter the room ..... “I’m here (They see you)”
Now, you embrace them .... “You are going to be alright.”
Jesus, by them touching his physical body, reassures them what you see is real.
I have to believe there was a lot of hugging going on!
This is what took place then ....
What they believed had happen (Fears and doubts) has now “dissipated” and what they have heard, seen, and have touched
....... is now “believable.”
How did Christ handle Fear and Doubt within his disciples .....
SPOKE into the Fear and Doubt
Get’s them to LOOK AT HIM in the midst of the Fear and Doubt
RELIEVES their fears and doubts by an embrace (TOUCH him)
PAUSE
Conclusion:
So what Fear are you dealing with today?
What doubt has been rising up within you?
Whatever Fear or Doubt it is, let me encourage you today to .....
Listen .... he is calling out to you!
Fix you eyes on Christ .... he is right before your!
Allow him to embrace you this morning .... He longs to touch your heart!
I have to believe there are some here this morning who have not been listening!
I have to believe there are some here this morning who have not had your eyes fixed on Christ!
I have to believe there are some here this morning who have not entered into an embrace with Christ!
