Introduction:
Today marks the beginning of a week known in the church as Holy Week or Passion Week.
It is the week in which we reflect on the coming of Jesus to Calvary to pay for our sins by offering up His life on the cross.
We refer to His offering up His life, because Jesus said that no one could take it from Him unless He gave it ().
In fact that is what Jesus said His purpose in coming into this world was all about in .
However, Jesus plans and mans were not the same ().
Not even the disciples who followed Jesus desired for Him to fulfill His plan ().
They were confused as to why Jesus would even go to Jerusalem in the first place.
It would be like you going into a town when there was a bounty on your head.
But Jesus was resolved to fulfill His purpose of rescuing us from the captivity of sin and glorifying the Father.
The gospel is about God's glory.
We are wondrously saved for His glory.
But many people think that the gospel is all about themselves.
In fact, they think Jesus is just their little trinket.
He is their personal God to do their bidding.
They misunderstand the role of a King.
They are looking for something else than who He really is.
This morning, we are going to discover the real King.
We are going to see the King of Glory!

Pray.
Before we get into our passage this morning, let me paint the scene in your minds.
Jesus is getting ready to come into the big, bustling city of Jerusalem at the time of Passover, the biggest festival of the year.
Many of you may have gone to the St. Patrick's Parade in Dublin this past weekend and mulled around at the Arts and Crafts Festival.
Some of you may have stayed away to avoid the crowds.
Now, imagine a whole city full of thousands of people with their families, livestock, and goods to celebrate the most important religious festival in the life of the community.
You can almost sense the suspense as Jesus comes up to the top of the hill called the Mount of Olives.
Here is a photo looking down on the city of Jerusalem.
Now, remember that Jesus was not exactly popular among the religious leaders of Jerusalem, and this was in fact a religious festival.
They would be out and about moving around.
Perhaps the disciples hoped after having tried to dissuade Jesus from coming to Jerusalem that they could just blend in with the crowds.
Maybe they could get into Jerusalem, celebrate the festival, and get out without being noticed.
But then it happened!
As they get to the top of the Mt. of Olives, Jesus stops and looking down on the city, he summons two of his disciples and sends them into the city to take somebody's donkey!
Two donkeys actually, a mother and her colt.
Now that won't draw a scene will it?!
If that weren't enough, Jesus then proceeds to get on the donkey and ride down the mountain and into the city on it.
No big deal right?
NOT!
This was an act that a king would do.
It was actually a fulfillment of prophecy and was a declaration by Jesus.
Jesus was declaring Himself to be King!

Conclusion:
What about you?
Jesus is still coming down the mountain into the city today and He would receive you if you will accept Him as your king.
However, Jesus came as a King and not a puppet.
He is not your toy God or your wishing genie.
He is not here to serve at your whim and command.
He is the Sovereign.
He is the Ruler.
He is the Authority in ALL areas of your faith and practice.
Some people want to separate out faith and practice.
Some want Jesus to be the God of their faith, but not of their practice.
They want to still live their own way.
But, our faith drives our practice.
Jesus has the right as your King to tell you how to live, tell you what to do with your time, money, and resources.
He has the right to get personal and get in your business.
Remember, not everyone will accept Jesus in as their King.
Some people don't see the need.
We love the American Dream.
We love to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and make something of ourselves.
But let me tell you, you can't pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and escape the quicksand of sin.
It will suck you deeper and deeper the harder you try to escape.
You have to have someone else pull you out of it.
That someone is Jesus.
Jesus knew the people would not accept Him as their King.
He knew that these very people who were calling out praises to Him and saying, "Hosanna, Lord save us!" would not be willing to receive His help.
They would be shouting, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!" in a few days.
But, Jesus knew what His mission was.
He was set on glorifying God by becoming the real Passover Lamb at this festival.
He would offer His blood up as the atonement for any who would believe and kneel to His lordship.
Today, hear His warning!
Judgment is coming!
One day, the stones of the city will not be overturned anymore, but the rocks of this earth will fall on people.
The sky will turn to blood and the stars will fall out of the sky on that terrible day of wrath and judgment as the King who was rejected returns to this earth to deal with sin and insurrection of His lordship.
Today is your day to kneel in faith and heed His warning of the coming judgment.
Today is your day to receive His mercy and His love for you.
Today you can praise the King of Glory.
I want to close by reading a beautiful psalm as our prayer.
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
5 He will receive blessing from the Lord
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty,
the Lord, mighty in battle!
