Intro- This week we are studying the theme “Ancient Words”.
We are looking at Bible words and how full of meaning they really are.
We are going to continue that theme in these classes as we look at the different relationships that we have and how they can honor God.
Today we are going to be talking about our relationship with our parents.
Quick overview of words:
μήτηρ - or meter - Is the Greek word used for “Mother”.
It just refers to the woman who gave birth to you.
Interestingly enough this same word is used figuratively by Jesus Himself in to refer to a “figurative mother” meaning someone who can take the place of a mother.
We have many individuals who do not have a physical mother in their life, however, they have women who have taken on that role for them.
πατήρ - or- pater- Is the Greek word used for Father.
This word is interesting because it can be a reference to the biological father, or a “forefather” meaning, one of your ancestors.
The interesting part about this word is it comes from a root word that’s meaning is - “nourisher, protector, and upholder”.
We generally think of fathers as the protectors, but often do not view them as a nourisher.
Nevertheless, that is what they are supposed to be in the eyes of God.
Parents have one of the hardest jobs in the world!
(Raising their kids to love the Lord).
Some kids have great parents, some kids have parents that are not fulfilling what God has required of them, some kids do not have their biological parents in their lives.
No kid gets to pick their family situation that they were born into.
However, every child has a choice in how they will behave in regard to their parents.
How we should treat our mothers.
How we should treat our fathers.
How we will treat our children.
