Theo out looking for gold. Lost track of where he was and the sun was obstructed by cloud cover. Found a fence row, one direction would take him to an aboriginal settlement, they other deeper into the outback. He was wearing light clothing and carrying a metal detector but had no food, water, matches or global positioning system on him. This was a life and death situation. Theo followed the fence row for miles only to find it end. If it had not been for the search parties finding his tracks he would have died in a vast wilderness.
Theo stood at a fence row with a decision to make. On

1. What They Had Seen
This is the most important day in history. We’re here today either because we believe in the resurrection, or because someone else believes it, and invited us along. But there is nothing in the world that demands consideration like the resurrection of Jesus. To not make a decision, is a decision in its self.
-Today we stand at a point of decision. For some of us it’s a first time decision, for others of us it is a renewed commitment. But the resurrection of Jesus is the most important point of decision in your life. Max Lucado, in his book Anxious for Nothing, points out that, “Belief always precedes behavior.” Every internal battle, every struggle with doubt, struggles with how we view other people, is all tied back to a belief. My worldview, how I understand life, is tied back to my beliefs. Wrong beliefs about myself, others, and most importantly God, lead to cognitive distortions that effect my life even more than I am aware.
G
Today you are not unlike Theo Rosmulder at a point of life and death decision. 1. We can remain in death, shame and guilt, or 2. We can give ourselves to believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and share in his resurrected life.
This is what the entire Christian faith rests on.

1. Looking for the living among the dead.

1. What They Had Seen
a. Looking for the dead End of Ch. 15; Jesus’ body was taken, prepared, and placed in a tomb. (ESV) “Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
They “brought spices that they might anoint him.” (16:1)
b. They “brought spices that they might anoint him.” (16:1)
Joses saw where he was laid.
“Who will roll away the stone? (3) They are going to grave. Where they expect a body. Where they say “goodbye.”
2. What They Experienced Upon Arrival
a. The stone “...rolled back...” (16:4)
Entering, they found, “A young man sitting on the right side...” (16:5)
From Lukes account we read, (ESV Strong's) “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”....Here we read, “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified...” STOP! Up until this point, what mindset have they been under? What have their minds been fixed on? “Jesus is dead...” They haven’t remembered the words of Jesus in “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Search for the Risen Jesus.
Point of belief: Search for the risen Jesus. There is such a thing as someone who is saved, they’ve placed their trust in Jesus, but they still live a life preparing spices, and wondering who will roll that stone away. I think some people choose not to believe and search for reasons not to. The truth is, they would rather not have Jesus be alive. That way their will be no rain on their parade. But if you’re interested in a life changing relationship with God, if that sounds like something you would actually want, you’re in a good place this morning. Reach for him.

What Mark Is Driving At

2. What Mark Was Getting At...

What Mark Was Getting At...

They experience shock.
Response? “…alarmed...” (5)
a. Mark pays attention to they women’s responses. “…alarmed...” (5) the angel says, “do not be alarmed...” When they go out from this tomb, “...trembling and astonishment had seized them…they were afraid.” (8) Mark wants you to feel what they felt. If he hand’t make these feelings a point, we may be left to believe we would have responded differently.
What brought on the shock? They where searching for the Jesus who had been crucified and where met with the message that he was alive (6)

They where searching for the Jesus who had been crucified and where met with the message that he was alive .
2. Mark wants us to wrestle through this.
c. Widely believed that he didn’t pen this part himself due to the change in language, and it’s absence from key manuscripts. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be there, whatever your thought on it, everything told there is supported in other scriptures (picking up serpents and drinking poison not, but God certainly provides protection.) Shouldn’t be a hang up.
Mark wanted to end abruptly. Throughout the gospel, Mark continually portrays people wrestling through who Jesus was. —> ; ; ; ; and here in today’s text, the women leave perplexed and afraid.

We cannot belief, it must be a decision.
Point of belief two: We cannot borrow belief, it must be a personal decision.

1. The lost; Maybe you’ve never heard the good news that Jesus loves you. That the sacrifice he made for you is so unfathomable that even if you begin to get it today, you’ll spend the rest of your life discovering how great that sacrifice was and how deeply God love’s you. 2. The Christian; So many lives stall out in the natural understanding of the resurrection, and never awaken to the spiritual life available. We say “He is risen” in word, but in practise we walk lives void of resurrection power.

Resurrection Life

3. Jesus Offers Resurrection Life

1. Asking questions with a powerless mindset.
a.“Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”(16:8) They are on their way, in their sorrow, they’ve gathered their spices, headed to the tomb and as they arrive, you can sense the powerless feeling. Not only is their Jesus dead, they aren’t even able to get to the body. This is a dark time.
2. You’re not the first one to wrestle with hopeless.
2. You’re not the first one to wrestle with hopeless.
b. We’re delivered TO something, “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! ...”
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
b. I think we often struggle with these same questions. Paul did “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”
We’re delivered TO something, “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! ...”
2. Delivered to life.....
Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
c. We are met with the same answer the women and Mark were met with- Jesus! Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
2. Delivered to life.....
Today we celebrate that the grave couldn’t contain Jesus. The cross wasn’t the end. The tomb wasn’t the end. That Jesus walked out of the grave. Today, Jesus invites you into a life with the same kind of power. Rm. 8:11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
b. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

App: Today, we stand at an empty tomb, with a tremendous amount of evidence that Jesus is alive, and with a stone rolled away, and we fix our attention back on the cross and realize that yes, apart from that, we stand condemned, we stand guilty, but that is not where our faith ends. Think what these women felt, not only is Jesus not here, he’s there! He’s going on ahead of them, if they go, they will see him…

“Prove it!” = God unsearchable. That makes Him God.
