2018 07 25 SERMON 73 Palm Sunday – the Mind and Way of Christ – Walk the talk ( ) v5

Have you heard the phrase – “WALK THE TALK”?

It’s all just clever talk, can they really walk the walk…?
Do we say one thing…. But the reality is we act differently
…the occupational hazard of being a Christian?
Wonderful words praises and readings on Sunday..
do…we… can… we… really mean it…!?!
Can we be …. What that great modern evangelist Reinhard Bonke calls….,
Submarine Christians… who spend the week living in the murky depths..
Coming up for air to sing hymns and pray like an angel on Sunday …
Before… glug glug glug sinking back into the murky depths for the rest of the week…

Do I practice what I preach?

well I do go home and read my own sermons…

LIVING & GROWING IN FAITH is ( the sometimes painful) challenge of the Christian life

How easy is it to get in a rut, of talking the talk,
claiming to be “down to earth and human” by indulging selfishness
instead of making an ever ready effort to freshly engage with Christian values

ARE WE Christians,.,.“DIFFERENT” …?

Yes, but not because we are superior, arrogant or exclusive…
By walking the walk with JESUS
Even through Holy Week
we become **more** fully human,
that our hearts ** all the more so ** preach gospel values
(even without religious words…)
it is walking the talk – putting faith into practice -
that builds the church and brings Christ into our lives

today is PALM SUNDAY – a most joyous day

- the celebratory crowds laying palm branches before Jesus,
- riding as a triumphant king entering Jerusalem…singing “ hosanna to the son of David…
this week

DURING HOLY WEEK Jesus will be tested

- the betrayal of a once loyal disciple close to him
- the crowds now supporting Him by hailing him Messiah will call for his punishment like a criminal
- the religious authorities will tell lies about him, plot His demise, because He is inconvenient to their power struggles
- The Roman soldiers who were supposed to protect citizens, will personally confront Him with mockery and insult,
- and he will be subjected to a deliberately cruel, tortuous death, exposed in humiliation to all passers by
all when Jesus could have hidden, run off, disowned or compromised His faith or fallen short of His calling,
He did not respond by falling into the trap of responding by becoming (similarly) personal - accusatory - confrontational argumentative- insulting or humiliating in return….
He bore the pain, and continued to serve or support
because He was the Son of God
how grateful we are
He remained true,
and followed through with all He had talked about
even at great cost to Himself

JESUS ..WALKS THE …TALK

will we follow Him, and walk in His way , this holy Week, and the rest of our lives?
The MIND OF CHRIST - & the WAY OF CHRIST
Today we are helped by our first reading,
that often recited early Christian hymn,

Which Paul quoted/rewrote for the Philippian Church
Paul considered they were getting into disputes and arguments because they
- were thinking in worldly ways-- - -
- too highly of themselves ----
to HEAR what GOD was saying
He reminded them how as Christians … we think in a different way..

WE SHARE THE MIND OF CHRIST –…CHRIST – who- EMPTIED HIMSELF & HUMBLED HIMSELF ..

CHRIST – who- EMPTIED HIMSELF & HUMBLED HIMSELF .. AND HEARD GOD

AND HEARD GOD
[in the wilderness, He had already refused the temptation to (block His ears to ) exploit His power , authority or influence - for personal gain in worldly ways
as I am sure we all know people can still do out there in the sometimes too worldly workplace / or in some voluntary organisations or clubs etc, or …etc]
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
HOW DO WE empty ourselves
and humble ourselves?
I have two suggestions – please send me more – - on a postcard ..or with a cappuccino
- ( empty ourselves by looking to God) In our worship
- ( humbling ourselves by making room for another) By our love
- [making ourselves vulnerable to others) By listening of heart
As every pastor, parent and good friend knows

AS EMPTY vessels

- To bear the pain of the one we love

WE have the capacity ….IN THE LORD … - To bear the pain of the one we love - and ours in hearing them

- and ours in hearing them

enough to SACRIFICIALLY
LISTEN EMPATHISE
SHARE – COMMUNICATE- LOVE
to stand with them in heart
like those who stood with Jesus at His cross
even hold out the forgiveness
God in Christ won there for us all

True and humble king, grant us the faith to walk with you, in times fair and troubled, on the way of the cross, that we may know and love you, and be found beside you, on your path of glory.

grant us the faith

to walk with you

in times fair and troubled

on the way of the cross

that we may know and love you

and be found beside you

on your path of glory.
