Peter, James, John & Jesus go high up on a mountain
Mark 9:2–8 ESV
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

Jesus is our Salvation
Moses represents the Law
Elijah represents the Prophets

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” 21 And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.

Meeting Him:
2 Kings 2:1–12 ESV
Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.” Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.
Elijah was 1 of 2 people in Scripture who went to heaven without dying in flesh first
Genesis 5:24 ESV
Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
2 Kings 2:11 ESV
And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
He was an amazing man of God
He did many wonderful things
bold & courageous
guided others to the truth
Life is over & he is taken up into heaven...
praising Jesus
went over & met Moses
(so that they could be aquatinted before the transfiguration)
May have had a few questions for Adam & Eve
Hindsight is 20/20 but could you imagine our hindsight when we are in heaven?
Thinking back to some of the miracles that God did thru him
boldness that he had that led others back to God
As much as Scripture shares that Elijah was a prophet proclaiming God’s truth
Scripture also shares another equally powerful role of Elijah
We influence one another
My kids started liking fidget spinners b/c other kids had them
Luke loves Nike brand b/c of his uncle (Megan’s brother) Jason
My kids learned a new word the other day (or rather a new use for a word that they knew) and when I enquired why they said that and where they learned it from… another kids says it
Thankfully we outgrow that...
People don’t start getting drunk because everyone else at the party is doing it
then that habit carries on thru their entire lives
Americans aren’t drawn to need to own certain things because of “Keeping up with the Jones’”
If Zack didn’t buy such a nice new car then I wouldn’t recognize that mine is 14 years old
I’m only 6 years away from getting Antique plates for l my daily driver
If your friend hadn’t took you to that club, you would have never went
1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
1 Corinthians 5:33
or Character
Let me say this:
people influence you
Elijah met Elisha in
Elisha was plowing the fields with oxen & left them to follow God’s man Elijah
from that point on they were practically inseparable
your hanging out with some of the wrong people and you need to quit allowing them to impact your life & find someone else to
people who will lead you in the right direction
Proverbs 19:20 ESV
Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.
2. In the same way we must all recognize that we are influencing the people around us
What kind of an impact will you have on their lives?
your kids will learn habits from you
talk like you
watch the shows that you watch
drive like you
relationships like you
work ethic like you
ladies what if your daughter dressed like you
gentleman what if your sons looked at women like you
Your reach is much further than your children
kid next door looking for a father figure
Elijah mentored Elisha
in hindsight (from heaven) Elijah was able to see that Elisha continued the work that Elijah was doing
I’m sure at times it would have been easier for Elijah to not spend the day teaching Elisha
but in hindsight I’m also sure that Elijah didn’t regret the time that he spent with Elisha
It may be easier for you to do life alone
It may be easier to give up on those around us when they seem to give up on themselves
BUT we will never regret showing others the way to Jesus
When this life is over I doubt we will regret any relationship other than the ones that pull us away from Jesus
Don’t be one of those relationships that someone else will regret
Proverbs 22:22–24 ESV
Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate, for the Lord will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them. Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man,
Proverbs 22:24-
Proverbs 22:24–25 NLT
Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.
we influence one another SO
be around the right people
those who influence you in the right direction
those who you can influence in the right direction
3. Positive influences and relationships are intentional
you will rarely stumble into a great relationship
seek them out
seek for those who are seeking a good relationship
show them the way
weed out some bad friends
cling to the good ones
or find new good ones
Seek to “mentor others”
Be intentional with relationships
