Opening passage
This passage tells us how Andrew, Simon, Philip and Nathaniel became disciples of Jesus Christ.
But I want to focus on the very first verse...
This identified Jesus with the Jewish Passover...
1,500 years before this, the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, and were greatly oppressed.
Through Moses, God told Pharoah to let the Jews go, but he stubbornly refused.
So God sent plagues, but he still refused.
So God determined to kill all the firstborn of the Egyptians.
The Jews would escape this judgement through the Passover lamb.
The Passover
There were three steps in the Passover sacrifice.
Step 1: They Chose an Unblemished Male Lamb
It had to be “without blemish”
When Jesus was handed over to Pontius Pilate...
Step 2: They killed and applied the blood of the Lamb
Note, first of all the killed the Lamb
Then the blood was applied to the door frame of their home using hyssop (a strong wiry plant found in the Middle East)
[Picture of hyssop]
Hyssop represents “faith”, by which the blood of Jesus is applied to our lives.
Even as the Jews were saved from God’s wrath against the Egyptians, so we are saved from God’s wrath through the blood of Jesus.
But, not only does the blood of Jesus save us from God’s wrath, it also heals us:
God heals physically.
But the above is spiritual healing.
We used to live for sin, but because of the cleansing blood of Jesus, we now live for righteousness - we have received moral healing.
That’s the most important type of healing to receive.
Step 3: They ate the lamb
They were to do so each year as a way of remembering the passover:
Even so, Jesus instituted Holy Communion, in which we symbolically partake of His sacrifice and remember Him:
And this we will now do, but first let me summarise...
Summary
Jesus is God's chosen unblemished Passover Lamb
Jesus’ blood is applied to our lives through faith in Him, bringing both salvation from God’s wrath and spiritual healing
Even as the Jews were to eat the Passover as a memorial, we are to eat the Lord's Supper in remembrance of Him
