The colt used in Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem

Jesus Christ’s instructions to his disciples

Luke 19:29–31 NKJV

And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”

Why would Jesus instruct the Disciples to get a donkey for Him to ride into the city on?

Normally Jesus and His disciples would walk wherever they went.

this is probably the only place we see Jesus not walking

Yet, this was not just any visit to Jerusalem

this was passover week - yet they had been there for passover before

This was The Triumphant Entry - the entry of the King into His city

This was the victorious entry that all creation had been waiting for -

that had been prophesied of for thousands of years

Although they believed that prophecy was being fulfilled, they did not understand the way

this was the time when they though that Jesus would overthrow the Roman government and establish a new government

It was necessary that He would ride into the city like the King that He is

It had also been prophesied that He would ride in on a donkey

Zechariah 9:9 NKJV

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.

Why a donkey that no one had ever ridden before?

There is much symbolism here

The King would normally have a horse that no one rode except Him

David had Solomon ride into the city on His own mule when he was establishing him as king

So it would be fitting that if Jesus were going to ride in on a donkey, that it not be ridden by others

Also, the is significance in the choice of an untamed donkey

Donkeys are not known for being the most submissive animal

they are known for being stubborn and having a will of their own

Animals that have not been ridden usually have to be broken in - ever see a rodeo?

This donkey however had never been ridden before - imagine how likely it would be to buck and refuse to be ridden

Yet, when Jesus sat upon him, this wild beast was calm and obedient, fulfilling the purpose for which he had been created

So many of us are just like that untamed donkey

we are so prone to go our own way - we don’t like to be “submitted” to anyone

We can be stubborn and not willing to be used

But when we come into the presence of Jesus, even the wildest of us, can be calmed, at peace, filled with His love, and used for every good work

How transforming Jesus Christ is to us

The choice of a donkey also represents peace and humility

Zec. “Lowly, (meek, gentle), riding on a donkey

Horse represents strength and power, especially for war

Donkey bear the burdens and represent humbleness, peace, service

Jesus brings peace and salvation

The obedience of the disciples

Matthew 21:6 NKJV

So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.

So often we question what the Lord wants us to do, even when we know what it is

we tend to reason with ourselves, to listen to the opinions of others, (“I think the Lord wants me to --- but what do you think”)

Jesus instructions must have seemed strange on the surface -

go to this place, see a donkey and take it, if the owner says anything say the Lord has need of it

We tend to start asking “what if...”

We want to obey the Lord but only after we know it isn’t going to cost us too much

everyone of us, has a place and a purpose in His kingdom, today

What if the owner says no

what if they beat us

what if we get arrested

what if we are embarrassed or humiliated

what if we fail - we are so afraid of failure -

But the disciples did what the Lord asked of them

this requires faith -

the faith that Abraham had to leave his home

the faith that Moses had to return to Egypt

the Faith that Noah had to build an ark

they faith that Solomon had to build the temple

the faith that you have in receiving Jesus today

I believe His promise - period - I have decided to follow Jesus

The Obedience of the Donkey’s owners

“If anyone asks you - - - say the Lord has need of it

Imagine seeing a stranger come to your house and taking your car?

On the surface this seems unlikely -

perhaps these were friends of Jesus, who knew Him well and would be happy to give the donkey

But then Jesus might of mentioned them by name

Or, maybe they were followers of Christ, like those of the multitudes who had been saved, like you and I

People who were filled with the Holy Spirit, and led by Him.

The Lord still speaks to us today - if we are willing to listen

The Lord had need of our intern house for instance-

the first grant to fix it up

Perhaps the Lord had dealt with these folks already in a similar fashion

they may have bought that donkey with one thing in mind, then the Lord showed them He would use it

perhaps that is why the donkey had never been ridden

The Lord has need of you today my friends

what do you have, that the Lord has said “I have ned of it?”

Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”

The multitudes were expecting their Messiah

the first Passover of His ministry, they were just learning of Him -

then He cleansed the temple and began to teach and do miracles

the Second Passover, they were not sure if He would come since the Jews had become envious and plotted to kill Him

This time, they knew He would be there.

His fame had spread through the whole country

Everyone had heard of His miracles

they knew He was from God

He had recently raised Lazarus from the dead

John mentions that for this reason many Jews had believed on Him, and many people had come to see him also

It might be said that this was the primary purpose of raising Lazarus from the dead

We all want a miracles, but do you want a miracle for God’s glory or yours?

If God will give you the miracles that you seek, how will you use it to give Him Glory?

Now Jesus is coming from that Mount of Olives, from the East, toward the Eastern gate, as prophesied

“Blessed is the King”

Palm branches were used in celebration of victory.

The response of the Pharisees to Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem

And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”

These Pharisees were shocked by what they were hearing

yet they couldn’t stop it so they appealed to Jesus himself to stop it

In all things Jesus Christ must have the Preeminence - He will be glorified

the whole creation groans awaiting that day

I don’t want a rock to have to cry out in my place

For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

How amazing this event must have seemed

in the middle of this celebration of praise Jesus knew what was coming

How most of these people professing to be followers were really just surface disciples

following the crowd for a moment but with no root in themselves

shouting praise today, but willing to turn as soon as the fun wears out, or the heat starts

not unlike the many pseudo Christians of today

So many people in todays churches, especially in our country, are willing to sing praise as long as its popular and glamorous, on Sunday, but look like everybody else the rest of the week

so many statistics are no longer any different among Christians than the rest of the world (nominal Christians that is)

But notice Jesus’s weeping here;

He knew what was about to happen to Him

How these people who seemed to love Him were going to turn against Him in less than a week

How they would shout crucify Him, and choose a murderer over Him

How he would be beaten and cruelly treated

How He would be nailed to a cross and be mocked by the crowd as He suffered to death

Yet, His weeping here was not for Himself:

Jesus wasn’t weeping because His feeling were hurt so badly

He was not weeping over the betrayal that was about to happen to Him

He was not weeping because of the pain that He would soon endure

He was weeping because of the loss that these people would suffer

He wanted every one of them to be saved

He wanted them to inherit eternal life

He wanted the City to live and thrive

But now, that wasn’t going to happen for them-

Because they had missed the time of their visitation

When we are hurt, abandoned or betrayed by people:

Is our weeping for them, or ourselves?

to we cry over what we lose, or what those who harmed us have lost?

Are we just angry because of what happened to us? Or do we truly understand the depth of the loss of those who do no know Him?

If we really know Jesus, then we know that our joy is not of this world. We have victory in Jesus that cannot be taken away, so we can afford to let our compassion be for others

Let’s try that for this coming week, as we prepare for Resurrection Sunday Celebration
