when someone shows up that many have been expecting.....there is excitement.
On this Palm Sunday, i can only imagine the energy level in the town as Jesus made His way toward Jerusalem.
most Christians call this day the beginning of holy week…the time Jesus entered the city as most all the people hailed Him as a King. as the King.
A prophetic fulfilling moment in time for the Israelites as they were believing, or wanting to believe that the Roman rule was about to end and Israel would have a King to reign in the land.
What can we learn from these events. as we read, may the Lord reveal His truth to us.
Matt
Matthew 21:1 ESV
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
Jesus had come from a long way off. from Capernaum
Map
that is a 70 mile journey.
But when we see Jesus almost get there, from Bethphage He sends two disciples to fetch a donkey and a colt. this wasn’t because Jesus could not walk anymore, but to enter the city as a King.
Matt
Matthew 21:2 ESV
saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
Matthew 21:3 ESV
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Matthew 21:4 ESV
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Matthew 21:5 ESV
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Matthew 21:6 ESV
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
Matthew 21:7 ESV
They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
Jesus is ready to enter the city a week before the passover. this is a time for Jesus to be celebrated as a King. but what King? as He truly is or as a King that they wanted?
think about that for a minute. they saw Jesus the way they wanted to. not who He really was. there is a disconnect going on. And the people don’t even know it. But Jesus does.
Can you and I fall into this at times? seeing Jesus differently then He really is? We have heard of teachings by some that are called name it claim it, blab it grab it, where Jesus becomes a means to more riches for some. What? How?
When people get off course with who Jesus is, it is because they are not looking at the Jesus of the bible. they might not be reading their bible but looking for someone else to feed them. that can be dangerous.
we need to grow to be students of scripture. as the Bereans studied every word that Paul spoke instead of just listening and agreeing. We must study and get to know Jesus through the bible so our understanding of Jesus is consistent with who He is in scripture. can i get an amen?
let’s look at how the people treated Him as He enters the city.
Matthew 21:8 ESV
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
what a beautiful cry these people had! Hosanna!
the word Hosanna can simply mean praise, but if we go back to the root in Hebrew, we see it actually meaning , I beg you to save me!
They were hoping to be saved from the rule of the Romans, but Jesus had plans for a greater salvation!
Matthew 21:10 ESV
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
Matthew 21:11 ESV
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Jesus had celebrity status throughout all the land. He did many miracles and showed His compassion and goodness to so many people, especially the ones that the world looked down on.
we see people getting excited when someone famous is going to be around them.... it is a thing that we have as people on earth. I can remember when bands were coming to do a concert and their fans were out of their minds with anticipation to see them. They were screaming and jumping up and down. some would even pass out!
But what about Jesus.
This is one of those times, that when all are celebrating, Jesus knows what next week will be. Still, fulfilling the plan all the way til the end.
What faithfulness, what integrity, what focus.
Jesus went through the highs and the lows for you and I.
So, when they asked the people “who is this man?” what can we say, but He is my King!
Is He your King today?
the King is here.
