Introduction -
Hello -
Fill out connection card -visitors.
Last week we started talking about the three goals of an apprentice to Rabbi Jesus.
That first goal was to be with Jesus.
It is first, because without being with Jesus you are not an apprentice to him and the other two goals will mean nothing.
We learned that God has given us everything we need to Be with Jesus in an intimate way that even the first apprentices did not experience while Jesus walked this earth.
We learned that not only has God given us the Bible but He has given us -
The Holy Spirit - who is another Just like Jesus who, lives in us.
And He has given us our imaginations - Which we can engage to help us envision Jesus speaking through His word, and speaking to us through the Holy Spirit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today we will tackle the last two Goals of an Apprentice to Jesus.
To Be Like Jesus
To Do The Same Work As Jesus.
How many of you have ever played Follow the leader?
(Have 4 volunteers to come up and demonstrate the game.)
All right!
Let’s give these brave souls a hand!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Follow the leader is a great illustration of what Jesus calls us to as His apprentices.
Jesus calls all who would desire to be His apprentice to Be Like Him!
Like Follow the leader we are called to follow Jesus in every way!
“....and cover yourself in the dust of their feet, and drink in their words thirstily.”
To get the dust of the feet of the rabbi all over you, you gotta be following him closely.
But follow means more than that, in the Greek it means To follow close and to imitate the one you are following.
As we read through the Gospels ask yourself; Is my life imitating His life?
Am I following Jesus to the homes of prostitutes, HIV positive gay couples, drug addicts and the worst of the worst?
Am I loving and sharing the Life of the Gospel with those I am predisposed to be disgusted with?
Become like - Greek Eimi - To be an exact copy.
Example - HYPOGRAMMOS
A representative form or pattern to be copied.
This word is used to describe the process of learning to write the Hebrew Alphabet.
(Show image of a Hypogrammos.)
The scriptures are clear we are to follow Jesus in every way.
We are to follow His teachings.
We are to follow the example of His life.
We are to become like our Rabbi.
To be LIKE our rabbi we have to be willing to practice His life.
To be like Him we have to be willing to fail.
To be like Him we have to be willing to get up and practice His life again.
And again, and again until we begin to not just believe in Him but begin to look like Him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ONCE WE BEGIN TO BE LIKE OUR RABBI, OUR RABBI WILL SEND US OUT TO DO THE SAME WORK HE DID.
The last goal of the apprentice of Jesus is to - Do what our rabbi Did.
Do what our rabbi Did.
Mark
Notice what Jesus empowered them to do
Call people to turn away from a life of death to the way of Jesus.
Heal the sick
Cast out demons
Look at again.
The original apprentices were not just given power to do the same work as Jesus at the start of their apprenticeship.
They were allowed to go out and do the work of Jesus only after practicing being like Jesus for over a year.
Jesus refused to entrust them with power until they had been imitating His life for over a year.
Why do we not see the same kind of healings?
Why do we so powerless against the tide of hate, injustice, filth, and corruption?
Why do our words seem to have so little impact on our neighbors and family?
Maybe because we skipped the second goal and tried to go straight to doing the work of Jesus.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We will never see the full power of God in our lives until we begin to reflect the teachings and the life of Jesus in our own lives.
Why would God empower a people to expand His Kingdom when our lives reflect the kingdom of this world?
We are being called to a radical, new and revolutionary way of living.
We are being called into apprenticeship of Jesus
We are being called into a new way of being human.
We are being called to be apprentices of Jesus.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
As we move into the Gospels these goals will also be the lenses we use to understand the words, life and actions of Jesus.
To Be With Jesus
To Be Like Jesus
To Be Sent To Do The Same Work As Jesus.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Gospels will mess our lives up.
The Gospels will change the way we think
The Gospels will change the way live
The Gospels will show us there is a different way to be Human.
