Genesis 13:5–18 CSB
5 Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. 6 But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together, 7 and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.) 8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives. 9 Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.” 10 Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the Lord’s garden and the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities on the plain and set up his tent near Sodom. 13 (Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the Lord.) 14 After Lot had separated from him, the Lord said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west, 15 for I will give you and your offspring forever all the land that you see. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Get up and walk around the land, through its length and width, for I will give it to you.” 18 So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the Lord.
Gen
As thier herds increase Abrahm and Lot have to split and go seprate ways and Abrahm gives Lot first choice of the Land. Lot chooses the fertile Plain near the river Jorden with its famusly wicked city of Sodom and Gomorah.
Is Abrahm frusterated when Lot takes the land, camps near Sodom and then returns to city life? certenly not, Abrahm does not plot his life around human choices, but by God’s instruction.
Genesis 13:5 CSB
5 Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.
Both Abrahm and Lot had been blessed highly of THe Lord.
Genesis 13:6 CSB
6 But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together,
The ammount of Livstock that abrahm got in Egypt probobly made it difficult for Abrahm and lot to dwell in close proximity. There would have been compitition for resources.
Genesis 13:7 CSB
7 and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.)
The above issue of the fact that both Abrahm and Lot had many flocs, herds, and tents. and there was limited areas availible for grazing created a problum and this led to strife between the herdsman of Abrahm and lot.
Both Abrahm and Lot have so much that the Land cannot support both of them, this event leads to quarling among there employees.
Te word quarrling here means strife or conflict. in later texts it has a meaning of a leagl controversy or dispute, but here it simply means an argument.
The quarrling between the hurdsman was without a doubt over watter and vegitation for the animals.
Genesis 13:8 CSB
8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.
Abrahm was Lots senior and had the right to chose first, however Abrahm gave lot first choice of the availible land. and Abrahm would take what was left.
Lot was Abrahms Nephew, his brothers son the idea that Abrahm wanted to pertray is also found in
Genesis 13:9 CSB
9 Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”
Because peaceful unity was not posible they chose to seperate, this truth is also found in Scripture ; . Abrahm offered Lot to take first choice, right refered to the south and left refered to the north.
What a difference Abrahm had between wanting to force what God had already promiced and here, letting God be God.
Romans 4:20–21 ESV
20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.
Abrahm did not have pease with God because
Genesis 13:10 CSB
10 Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the Lord’s garden and the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
he garden of the Lord is an illution to Eaden in that it was well wattered
“The Land of Egypt” throught the book of Genisis Egypt is a place to which people resort to in times of food shortage. the nile ensured the havest to be more reliable than that of cannon. In addition the powerful springs in the Jorden vally and beside the dead sea create fertile areas according to the entier book of Genisis thiw as a fwertile and wondeful place before the distruction of Sodom and Gomora.
Tis was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorah. This casts a shadow over Lot’s decision which is about to be announced. things are not nesesarily as good as the look. the form of this word destroy is only used twice in Genisis, here and refering to the flood.
Genesis 13:11 CSB
11 So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other.
Lot selected the plain of Jorden which was well irrigated and filled with vegitation
Genesis 13:12 ESV
12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom.
When Lot seperated from Abrahm God came to Abrahm and reafirmed the covenent promice
This event would have greatly consoled Abrahm. He then moved northword to Mamre, which was in vicinity of Hebron. and once again built an alter to the Lord
The city of Hebron lies twenty-two miles south of Jeruslem on the road to Beersheba. The antiquity of the site is implied by the fact that it was built seven years before Zoan in Egypy (
-The jorden vally was the center for moon worship and was charecterized by unbeliveble wickedness that centered in the city of Sodom. all indications are that lot tolerated this wickedness, but not without a vexed coscience 2 peter 2:7-8. little did he know that the physical beuty of the area was a small comparison in the distruction to come. When Lot seperated from Abrahm God came to Abrahm and reafirmed the covenent promice This event would have greatly consoled Abrahm. He then moved northword to Mamre, which was in vicinity of Hebron. and once again built an alter to the Lord The city of Hebron lies twenty-two miles south of Jeruslem on the road to Beersheba. Genesis 13:13 CSB
13 (Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the Lord.)
This verse hints at the fate of Sodom which is shown in chapter 19 this word for evil also discribed the world at the time of the flood sinning immensly, or great sinners is used only here.
In the Pentitutch sinners face suddon death. great sinners is used only here and shows the extreme seriousness of the sin of Sodom. This shows that the fate of the city will come and lots mistake in his choice is underlined.
Lot chose the things that are seen and found them corrupt
A person is known by His choises. Lots Choice put Him in contact with the Sodomites which were people known for living lives contrary to God’s way
Who do we have contact with that live lives contrary to Gods way
What are we doing that we think is paridice but like lot it will end in disaster.
Genesis 13:14 CSB
14 After Lot had separated from him, the Lord said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west,
Due to Lots selfesh actions, he wgrows more and mor uninvolved. Abrahm, on the other hand.found liberation
God did not get involved until after Lot had departed, He had been watching and observing, but letting Abrahm and lot deal with the issue on there own. and each one will have to live with the consequenses of thier choices. This is an importent note as we raise Children, we need to train and teach them, but sometimes we need to let them make their own choices and live with the consequences of those choices.
After Lot had departed God comes to Abrahm and afirms His promice to HIm
Genesis 13:15 ESV
15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.
God promices land.
Genesis 13:16 ESV
16 I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted.
