Where do we find our rest?
Illus: Maple Street Biscuit Company: What would you do with a pot of gold?
New Car, Big House, Disney Land, Aruba, Vacation, Plastic Surgery…3 people said give it away.
Structure: Chiasm ABCB’A’

A: Confidence in the Lord

What is competing with the Lord in your life?
David here is reflecting on the Lord and who He is. David receives complete consolation knowing that the Lord is sufficient.
The Lord can give REST. He can provide SALVATION and STRENGTH
Salvation: Redemption, Vindication, Enjoyment of Covenantal privileges
The Lord alone is ABLE to save and is faithful to his covenantal love. He is a Divine Warrior, He is Strong.
Why Don’t we rest in the Lord? Why do we rest in financial security…unlimited pleasure…or authoritative power?
Resting in the Lord requires patience, waiting, faith. But it is WORTH IT.
Illus: Duck vs Cat

B: Humanity is Unreliable

Does the sinfulness of man lead you to despair or to Christ?
This is not a low view of humanity. A low view of humanity is to think that people are worthless and can be disposed of for any reason—abortion and living centers.
What David understands about humanity is that it is opposed to the Lord. Because of this, humanity is chaotic, destructive, selfish, and deceitful.
(Government is needed)
“How Long?” The question is in the form of an indignant challenge of the confidence of the ungodly.
Evil takes many forms: Here it is Words and Deeds. They are aggressive and relentless.
Enmity between the Seed of the Woman and the Seed of the Serpent.
Understanding who we are as a humanity shouldn’t leave us in despair…it should drive us to Christ. If it does not it is because our views of one or the other are incorrect.

C.: The Lord of My Salvation

Is your identity bound up in the Lord?
Refrain—salvation and now HOPE
REST—Creation Seventh Day…different from other days…NO TIME STAMP.
Where does hope come from? THE LORD.
When difficulty arises or when things don’t go how you want them to go…the Lord is in his mercy revealing to you that your hope lies somewhere else.
As Christians the Bible tells us firmly who we are. We are sons and daughters of the king. We have an inheritance that is beyond our imaginations. And yet we live in despair.
Cocoa—knows he is a dog. Chases squirrels. Barks at cats. Wags his tail.
Rick Warren—Purpose Driven Life.
Faith is the antidote to despair, we must believe what the Bible says about our identity.
“The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” Tim Keller

B’: Trust the Lord, Not People

Is your view of man too high? Or God too low?
The Lord alone is unfailing. We should never be surprised by people who fail us…heroes in the faith fail us constantly.
Billy Graham—Tullian
This should not cause us to disregard humanity…to pull away from humanity…but to see them for who they are…sinners in the need for mercy and grace which only comes through Jesus.
It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor…you die.
Bruce Willis—religion is only for poor people. Wrong.
It doesn’t matter what we do or try we will die. Death and taxes....guaranteed.
WE NEED RESURRECTION.
Don’t look at the rich and think…man I want that. Most riches comes through deception, extortion, and theft. MOST NOT ALL.
Handicap Tags—abuse of the government—loops and holes in different systems.
POUR OUT your hearts to Him at ALL TIMES.

C’: Confidence in the Lord’s Word

Does the final judgement bring clarity or confusion?
David reflects on God’s Word and remembers 2 Things
Gos is Strong
God is Loving
God is able to deliver his people and his deliverance is an act of love. God is just in his rewards and in his vindication.
1 Peter 1:17 CSB
If you appeal to the Father who judges impartially according to each one’s work, you are to conduct yourselves in reverence during your time living as strangers.
Revelation 22:12 CSB
“Look, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to repay each person according to his work.
Jesus—I will give you rest. Come to me.
Matthew 11:28–29 CSB
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
God will reward us because we are in Christ. We must walk in that new identity.
Revelation 22:12 CSB
“Look, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to repay each person according to his work.
