A lot of times these people will have secular authority over your life.
They have the abilities to make your life hard.
It could be a Spouse, it could be an unsaved parent, it could be your boss at work.

“not return evil for evil or insult for insult” Look at what Peter says they will want to know: “give an account for the hope that is in you”
Why will they want to know about your hope?
Answer:Hope for the Christian is not based on chance, but a settled trust that my God has my future in his hands.
-During that time People were used to seeing people fold under the pressure of the Roman Government.
When they wanted something they bribed, forced, or intimidated people to submit.
The Christian was to remain resolute even if it meant losing their life.
They were not to cave in, be bribed, nor quit in the face of extreme adversity.
-And the only thing that could cause this type of behavior is “Hope” of something outside of themselves to cause this type of perseverance.
Peter says we must always be ready to give a defense why would he say this?
Peter
