Introduction:

We know that Jesus has been teaching the 70 or 72 that he has selected to send ahead of him to announce his presence to the cities along his journey to Jerusalem.
We know that Jesus is going to Jerusalem.
Jesus has taught complete association with him. Being his disciple means taking up the cross and following him. It means being committed to him completely.
In this text, Jesus teaches them what to expect from the world.
Note .

Positive Association with Jesus

This is a variation on 9:48.
There is a direct connection between how one treats a believer and how one thinks about God. Also, there is a direct association between believers in Christ and the treatment of Christ. We are witnesses of the truth in a hostile world. Note also Paul's words in where Paul lists a second reason why he thanks God. The positive point would be to note here that what Jesus said to these disciples remains relevant for us. We bear the message of Christ. When we preach the word of God accurately, we are providing people with the very message of Christ himself. We are not theorizing or offering an alternative philosophy. Christ is God incarnate. We preach the message of God.

Luke 12:51
The broader point here is that those who treat the message preached by Jesus representatives do so because they think that the message they bear, the one the preach, and the God they claim are all invalid and without foundation.
These scriptures suffice for us to see the key point. Association with Jesus is to be total, and God treats it as though it is.
Suffering is a positive thing for the people of God. It brings about our maturity (), and it produces a greater longing for the return of Christ ()
