As we begin this morning, understand that we are not looking at a comprehensive view of all that the Bible has to say about the wife’s role in marriage. We are going to focus on two aspects primarily: SUBMISSION & RESPECT.
A good portion of the sermon is taken from my notes at the Biblical counseling conference.
Start with a few quotes that will remind us about the equality and biblical roles of men and women.
Next Slide - Quotes
Let me define male-female equality: Man and woman are equal in the sense that they bear God’s image equally. Let me also define male headship: In the partnership of two spiritually equal human beings, man and woman, the man bears the primary responsibility to lead the partnership in a God-glorifying direction. John Piper & Wayne Grudem, Recovering Biblical Manhood & Womanhood
Husbands lead in a God-glorifying direction.
“A popular view today is that woman’s subordinate role is a result of the Fall. Since God reversed the effects of the curse through Christ, some argue, he abolished differing male and female roles. Paul, however, grounds woman’s subordinate role in the order of Creation, not in the Fall. “For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve” (1 Tim. 2:13). Eve was created after Adam to be his helper (Gen. 2:18) - she was designed to follow his lead, live on his provisions, and find safety in this strength. Such tendencies were from that point on built into all women, but with the Fall came conflict. John MacArthur, Different By Design
Fall brought sin. You put two sinners in a room together and there will be some conflict because we are all to some degree selfish and want our own way.
Man & Wife - matrimonial rub...
We don’t look to our culture to find our feminine identity; we don’t consult our feelings to discover our purpose. Everything that we are and everything that we do must be rooted in God…We are intentionally and purposefully created. We are the planned and foreordained determination of an all-wise, all-powerful, and all-loving God. Carolyn Mahaney, “Femininity” in Biblical Womanhood in the Home.
What we see from Scripture and these quotes are stating:
Men and woman are created equal! In God’s image.
God ordained an order to exist in this equal partnership.
The wife completes the husband as a help-mate suitable for him.
The roles we accept in marriage are rooted in our obedience to God.
