Sin Verses Grace
Paul ended chapter 5 by saying “where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
So when there was an increase in sin, there was an increase in grace.
It is through grace—favor that we do not deserve—that Jesus, the Messiah, brings us eternal life.
So if God’s grace can be seen more easily when sin increases the logical question is should we keep sinning so grace may abound?
If you have your Bibles turn with me to .
Romans 6:1-
That’s Crazy!
Paul says by no means should we keep on sinning for grace to increase.
We Died to Sin
If we are dead to sin how can we live in sin any longer.
The problem is this: even if we are made dead to sin we have not experienced that freedom.
When a person is baptized we say this phrase, “Buried with Christ in baptism, raised to walk in newness of life.”
If you have ever wondered where this idea came from it came from , “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
When we come to verse 5 we are reminded that we are fully united with Jesus.
Romans 6:5-
United with Jesus in death/United in His resurrection
This is something that we need to focus on and live out!
Our old self—Our sinful self has been crucified!
Why is it a dead part of me has so much control over me?
Paul argues that anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
So why don’t I experience that freedom?
Paul helps us understand.
Romans 6:8-10
Dead Yet Alive
Paul says that we died with Jesus, and now we are alive with Him.
Death no longer has any mastery over Him, and sin no longer has any power over Him!
The Life He lives, He lives to God.
Don’t miss this! Look at verse 11!
Romans 6:11-14
Dead to Sin/Alive to God!
We are to count or consider ourselves as dead to sin.
If I’m dead to sin then sin cannot have any control over me.
So why is it that so many of us cannot shake free from our sin?
Don’t allow sin to reign
Do not obey its evil desires
One big problem many of us have is that we give in to sin.
We end up obeying sin instead of resisting sin.
Do not offer the parts of your body to sin
We end up giving our body over to sin.
Alcohol, drugs, sex, so many things that we can give our bodies to, that are sin!
Don’t allow sin to Master you!
Who is our master?
We either allow sin to be our master, or we allow God to be our master.
The one thing I know is that we cannot serve two masters.
Sin Has No Place In Our Lives!
Look at verse 15!
There are only two choices.
You are either a slave to your sin (and ultimately Satan), or you are a slave to God.
Being a slave to sin leads to death.
Slave
But it you follow after sin, you much understand that the wages of sin is death—both physical death, and spiritual death.
