It Depends Upon Who is Making The Invitation

We all know the old folk lure phrase “don’t take any wooden nickels”

DON'T TAKE ANY WOODEN NICKELS - "First recorded in about 1915, this expression was originally a warning from friends and relatives to rubes leaving the sticks in the great migration from rural areas to the big cities at the turn of the century.

According to the Wooden Nickel Museum, the first wooden nickels didn't come around until the 1930s:

On December 5, 1931, the Citizen's Bank of Tenino, Washington failed and created a shortage of money.

This left the merchants of the area unable to get change without traveling about 30 miles over mountainous roads in automobiles ill suited to that purpose, on roads that were built for horses and mules to traverse.

The average round trip was about four hours.

Much too long for merchants to be gone from their stores.

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce resulted in the local newspaper printing up the first issue of wooden money in the United States.

Several other places, mostly in the Pacific North-West, issued wooden money after that.

[...] In 1934 a new use for wooden nickels was found-a combination of advertising for civic celebrations and providing souvenirs of the celebration.

Binghamton NY was one of first places to embrace this concept.

Wood continued to be used to enhance civic celebrations such as centennials through the mid 1930’s.

It is the source of the appeal that must be taken into consideration.

a.

Is the person or company making the appeal reputable?

b.

How long have they been in business?

c.

Do they have a good business record.

d.

Are there a list of references.

2. What are the consequences of me accepting the appeal?

3. What the consequences of refusing the appeal?

4. What does my choice say of me?

5. We are given choices every day that may or may not have an impact on our lives.

Some have little or no consequence ( A big mack or a Whopper )

While some have life-long impact ( the choice of a spouse, the choice of a college or university ) ( to drink and drive) (to ride with the drunk driver)

At the least these choices only are temporal.

They only last for a term ( a bad loan)

or just to the end of your life.

(Till death do you part).

But there is a call or an invitation that has eternal consequences.

And this choice of acceptance or refusal should be made with the utmost care and consideration.

After this life there is a life that is guaranteed that will be unending and everlasting.

: 53 the apostle Paul states that corruptible shall put on incorruption and the mortal shall put on immortality.

Referring to the coming of the Lord.

Though he is basically referring to the glorifying of the saints, the fact remains for the eternal existence for the saved and unsaved is an eternal state of existence.

How many times have you regretted signing a new cell phone contract or a satellite deal and realized it was not a deal after all and you had to wait the two-year term out to change?

You can get over that.........

But the length of eternity is permanent unending.

The Invitation of God

Let us look at our text for today:

Proverbs 1:24-

Let us revisit the points we made earlier about the appeal:

It is the source of the appeal that must be taken into consideration.

1.

The appeal is coming form God and the Lord Jesus

a.

Is the person or company making the appeal reputable?

Besides Me There Is No God

  Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it?

ye are even my witnesses.

Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

He cannot lie

  In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

God will not change you: 

For I am the Lord, I change not; Therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

He has all Authority

Jesus spoke to his disciples after his resurrection in He said all power (authority (exousia) is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

b.

How long have they been in business?

God has been in business for ever before time.

Says in the beginning God.

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

Verse 14 says and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us (Jesus)

c.

Do they have a good business record.

I am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

God says accept him you accept life;

Deu 30:19  I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 

God gives you a new spirit and heart:

Ezekiel 36:26

26 eA new heart also will I give you, and efa new spirit will I put within you: fand I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, fand I will give you an heart of flesh

Jesus says

  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
