Welcome tonight to our the first part of our study on the Holy Spirit.
This is important - and many people are interested.
(Notes Derived from Systematic Theology 3 @ Southern Seminary with Dr. Gregg Allison)
A Proper understanding is critical for many things
o Our understanding of salvation
o Our grasp of assurance of salvation
o Understanding of perseverance
o Our sanctification (you can’t mature without Him)
o Reading Scripture
o Praying (Romans 8:26-27)
o Understanding and following God’s Will
o Exercising Spiritual Gifts
o Etc, Etc, Etc,
divisions within evangelicalism
Deep division exist
Pentecostals/charismatics
(First Wave Movement)
Beginning of 20th century – CA – azusa street revival
Pentacostal, apostalic, Assemblies of God and other
Believe that Baptism by or with the HS is a second blessing
Takes place subsequent to salvation (seconds, minutes, hours, days…)
Speaking in tongues is a necessary manifestation of the spirit baptism
Miraculous gifts (all including sign gifts) are given and available and should be common place in the church (Prophecy, speaking in tongues, interpretation, word of knowledge, wisdom, healings, miracles, exorcisms)
Second Wave
1960s – Charismatics – enters mainstream churches
michigan – Ann Harbor /South Bend Indiana/Ohio
non-Pentecostals/charismatics
- Believe – At time of conversion – Jesus Baptizes believer with the HS to incorporate into the Church.
- Not subsequent, but simultaneous of salvation.
Jesus does this.
- Tongues is not necessary.
o Many believe speaking in tongues a result of peer pressure or demonic activity.
- There are no miraculous or sign gifts being distributed by the HS to the Church today.
-
- Not to say that God can’t do miracles or healings.
But if He does he does it himself.
- Reserved for the early church to confirm the Gospel message and the Gospel messengers.
-
- third wave evangelicals
- 1980’s – embrace some theology of Pentacostalism yet rejects others.
-
- From non charismatic side
- Baptism with the HS is at the moment of conversion to incorporate into Church
- Not necessarily accompanied by speaking in tongues
- But 3rd wave – believe sign gifts are continued and should be common place1.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
So, there is a deep division among evangelicals on how the Holy Spirit works today, but over the next couple of Sunday nights, we will try to gather a biblical perspective on who He is, and how we relate to Him today…
1.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
A. Consider His Personality
1.
He understands all things
The HS is omni-intelligent
2.
He can be grieved
3.
He exercises His will in gifting those who come to faith
So, the HS exhibits intelligence, emotion, will.
This is important because we often focus on His Power - He becomes an impersonal force, strength, energy
But the HS is a person.
Further, we see that he:
4.
He speaks, prays, teaches, bears witness (Acts 8:29; Rom.
8:26-27; John 14:26; John 15:26; Rom.
8:16)
5.
He is distinguished from His power
So, consider His personality, but also His:
B. Consider His Deity
1.) Parallelism (Acts 5:3-4, 9; 1 Cor.
3:16-17)
Annanias and Saphira –
v. 3 – lied to the HS
v. 4 – not to men, but to God (Parallelism – HS is God)
v. 9 – Testing the Spirit of God
Further in:
– Stephen “You always resist the HS” vv.
42, 45, 48 – speaking about the God of the Old Testament – He who is present now, is the same God that is the God of the Old Covenant.
Ps 51:11 – David’s prayer of confession “Cast away from Your presence, nor take the HS.
parelelism HS is God.
Not only these parallelisms but also:
2. ) Divine attributes (Ps.
139:7-10; Is. 40:13-14; 1 Cor.
2:10-11; John 16:13; Luke 1:35; Hebrews 9:14)
– HS is omnipresent
– HS is omniscient
– HS – He knows the future
Luke 1:35 – HS is omnipotent (impossible is nothing to the HS)
Hebrews 9:14 (?) – HS is eternal
3. ) Divine works
a.)
In creating and sustaining (Gen.
1:2;
b.)
In regeneration (
c.) In inspiration
d.)
In the resurrection
4.) Divine honor
C. Consider His Relationship
1.) His nature: homoousios (same substance)
we affirm with the early church – same nature, essence as the Father and Son
No difference in nature, divine attributes
Yet, they are distinct (HS not the Father or Son)
The HS eternal proceeds from the Father and the Son
2.) His procession: eternally from Father and Son (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7; 20:22; Rom.
8:9)
the Nicene-Constantinople Creed (381), Synod of Toledo (Spain, 589), (“We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son”)
procession is double and eternal
Does not mean that the Father and Son created the HS
The HS is eternal
Doesn’t receive nature or deity from Father or son.
the Holy Spirit is autotheos = God of himself (all three person share in the one identical and undivided being of God; all three persons are fully and eternally divine)
