Introduction
What is an Anti-Christ?
If you were paying attention to the text you would see that it defines an antiChrist here.
But the word definition of Anti-Christ is:
according to Vincent: “one who stands against Christ, or one who stands instead of Christ”
one who stands against Christ, or one who stands instead of Christ
BTW - only John uses this phrasing of anti-christ to speak of types of people.
In fact he says many people are antichrists in v.18
Are you an Anti-Christ?
There is 6 things that an anti-Christ does:
Leaves churches (v.19)
Never really belonged to the church (v.19)
Speaks against the truth (v.22)
Denies Jesus is Christ (v.22)
Denies Jesus and the Father (v.22)
Leads people astray (v.26)
If you are an antichrist God is not with you (v.23)
Are you Christ’s?
There is 10 things about someone who belongs to Christ:
They are His Dear Children
this phrase was totally unheard of when this was written.
The greco-Roman gods never loved their own worshippers.
Albert A Bell Jr. points out that virtually only the Egyptian god Isis shows any love to her worshipers in the ancient world.
So the phrase “dear Children” would have a great impact because that was unheard of.
Stays with the church (v.19)
Has the Holy Spirit given to them by Jesus (v.20)
Knows the truth, and knows the difference between truth and lies (v.21)
Accepts Jesus as Christ (v.22)
Accepts Jesus and God (v.22)
Remains faithful to what has been taught.
(v.24)
If you do, the promise is that you will remain in fellowship with Jesus and the Father for eternal life.
People want to lead Christ’s children astray (v.26)
Holy Spirit lives in you (v.27)
Holy Spirit teaches you everything you NEED to know (v.27)
If you are Christ’s you have the Father also (v.23)
Conclusion
Conclusion
Remain (imperative - “command”) in fellowship with Christ (v.27)
