Elementary - very basic, can’t go very far
Rudimentary - limited in scope and content
But most accurately: “what belongs to a series”
Remember, we’re in “bondage” or are slaves to it
A series is a progression - what naturally follows
Its just what the ruler of this world - Satan - wants to happen
Look at this scripture:
See the progression here - the “elements” of the world?
Its the same pattern that led Adam and Eve into messing up
Desire - I want it
Gen 3:6 says that Eve saw that the fruit of the tree was “desirable” for gaining wisdom - to be like God
Enticement - looks really good
looks good, sounds good, tastes good (Eve)
Conception - the act happens
We make the choice - I’ll just go ahead and do it
Sin - missing the mark, got sidetracked
Missing the mark - can’t get to God =
Death - God can’t be found
death - nothing of God at all
Happens with:
addiction
money/debt
marriages/relationships
In the world, we’re slaves to this stuff!
We can’t help ourselves!!
It started a LOOOONG time ago:
Redeemed - Now What?
But our text says that Christ came to redeem us from the slavery/bondage of the world.
But its no good to just set someone free - prisoner fresh from prison
REDEEM means so much more than that.
To REDEEM means to put you back where you were originally intended to be.
Lot of words - but nothing concrete.
Nothing to get it done.
Nothing to really help me out.
Not so fast, doubter!
The Spirit
He made us sons of God, and because we are sons, our text tells us that
Broke the bondage, paid the price, and sent the way to remain free - the Spirit
Life in the Spirit - No Longer Slaves!
The Spirit has the answer to the worldly elements that we were subject to.
He has a different life that he wants us to live.
Actually, its the life that he planned from the beginning:
Worldly Enticement - Spiritually contented
Human Desire - Spirit brings satisfaction
Act of Conception - Spirit gives self-control
Sin brings separation from God - the Spirit brings us closer to God
Sin brings Death - the Spirit gives life
