GOD WANTS TO TALK TO YOU

INTRODUCTION:

1. If you have been in church or around Christians any amount of time you have most likely heard these phrases before - “The Lord spoke to me,” or “I heard the Spirit say,” or, “I have this feeling that the Lord said to me…”
Have you heard any of those before?
Well, those statements presuppose one thing: God still speaks.
NOTE: Our God is a speaking God.
In fact, He has always been a speaking God.
Genesis 1:3 MEV
3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Psalm 33:9 MEV
9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
NOTE: Our God isn’t silent…He is a communicator…and He’s still speaking today.
But most of all, He wants to talk to you.
NOTE: If you are His child, He wants to lead & guide you…He wants to give you direction & be involved in your decision making.
God wants to give you counsel & advice.
God wants to talk to you.
He wants to show you what to do or not do.
Exodus 33:11 MEV
11 The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. When he returned to the camp, his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.
God wants to talk to you.
In fact, I would say that God is speaking to you…but the question is - Are you listening?
NOTE: God is always speaking, but we’re not always listening & receiving what He’s saying.
We’re not always tuned into Him, & we miss out on what He’s saying to us.
2. So this morning, I want to begin a short series of messages entitled Can You Hear Me Now? where we’ll talk about hearing the voice of God & being led by the HS.
We’ll also learn how God speaks to us & how we can know if it’s really God speaking to us.
3. But today, I want to answer 2 questions - Why is important to hear from God?…Why can’t I hear God’s voice?

1) WHY IS IMPORTANT TO HEAR FROM GOD?

1. Some people may think it’s not that important to hear from God...But you shouldn’t have that kind of attitude.
2. In fact, I would submit to you that you need to be hearing from God on a daily basis.
Here’s why?
There are three reasons why it’s absolutely vital for you to hear directly from God.

A. It proves you’re in God’s family.

When you are tuned in to God and hear from him, it confirms your relationship with Him.
John 10:3–5 MEV
3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name, and he leads them out. 4 When he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them. And the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him. For they do not know the voice of strangers.”
NOTE: God talks to His children…and if you’re not hearing His voice, it could be an indication that you’re not His.
For they do not know the voice of strangers.”
says, “My sheep recognize my voice and follow me” (NLT).
Notice that He said in verse 3, His sheep hear His voice...He didn’t say His sheep CAN hear His voice or SHOULD hear His voice...He made the emphatic statement that His sheep DO hear His voice.
John 10:27 MEV
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
says, “My sheep recognize my voice and follow me” (NLT).
Notice that He said in verse 3 & 27, His sheep hear His voice...He didn’t say His sheep CAN hear His voice or SHOULD hear His voice...He made the emphatic statement that His sheep DO hear His voice.
says, “My sheep recognize my voice and follow me” (NLT).
Just as parents talk to all their children, God talks to all of his kids. He doesn’t just single out the pastors or the missionaries, or those who have been Christians the longest. He talks to all believers, whether they are mature or immature.
Jesus said very plainly - If you’re His, you will hear Him.
NOTE: Just as parents talk to all their children, God talks to all of His children.
He doesn’t just talk to the pastors, prophets, or the missionaries, or those who have been Christians the longest.
He talks to all of His children…from the brand new believer to the seasoned saint, God talks to all of those who are a part of His family.
Romans 8:14 NLT
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
Paul says those who are led by the HS are God’s children.
So what does all of this mean - Hearing God’s voice & being led by the HS proves that you’re a child of God.
Hearing God proves you’re in His family.
So, if you never hear from God it is a good indication that you’re not a part of God’s family.
Example: If the Word of God never speaks to you, you may not be a child of God.
And just as children recognize their parents’ voices, we should be able to recognize God’s voice. Now babies don’t instantly know their parents’ voices, but as they grow, they naturally begin to recognize mom or dad’s voice and can hear it anywhere. It’s the same with us. As we grow spiritually, it becomes easier to hear God.

B. It protects you from mistakes.

It protects you from mistakes. If you listen to God, you’ll make fewer mistakes because you’ll hear him warning you in advance. says, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, and everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track” (MSG).
If you listen to God, you’ll make fewer mistakes b/c you’ll hear Him warn you in advance.
How many of you would like to make fewer mistakes in life?
says, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, and everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track” (MSG).
How many of you would like to make better decisions?
We can if we will listen for His voice.
says, “Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, and everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track” (MSG).
Proverbs 3:6 NLT
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Notice the verse didn’t say “seek his will” just in church...it says, “seek his will in ALL you do.”
Notice the verse didn’t say just in church; it says, “in everything you do, and everywhere you go.” I couldn’t count the number of times God has saved me from wasting time, wasting money and wasting energy because I listened to him. It produces success in life. This is not the kind of success the world talks about where you’re famous and filthy rich. This is God’s definition of success – being exactly who God made you to be so that your life can have meaning.
NOTE: God can save you from wasting time, money, & energy if you will listen to Him.
In fact, we could avoid much of the trouble that we get ourselves into…if we would listen to His voice.
Psalm 37:5 MEV
5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.

C. It produces success in life.

It produces success in life.
Now I’m talking about being rich & famous when I talk about success.
When I say that you can be successful - I mean that you can be exactly who God made you to be & you can do everything that God created you to do.
NLT). Did you know that the best pathway for your life is different than the best pathway for someone else’s life? And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway you’re life will be filled with problems.
Psalm 32:8 MEV
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you.
NLT). Did you know that the best pathway for your life is different than the best pathway for someone else’s life? And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway you’re life will be filled with problems.
Psalm 32:8 NLT
8 The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.
Did you know that the best pathway for your life is different than the best pathway for someone else’s life?
Did you know that the best pathway for your life is different than the best pathway for someone else’s life? And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway you’re life will be filled with problems.
Did you know that the best pathway for your life is different than the best pathway for someone else’s life? And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway you’re life will be filled with problems.
And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway your life will be filled with problems.
God has a customized pathway for you, and if you follow it you will succeed.
NOTE: God has a customized pathway for you, and if you follow it you will succeed.
Iow’s, if you will follow God’s will for your life…you will see God’s best in your life.
NOTE: God knows what is best for you & He will guide you if you will listen.
NOTE: You have to follow God’s plan for your life, not God’s plan for someone else’s life.
The best pathway for your life is different than the best pathway for someone else’s life.
He can guide you to the right relationships, the right job, the right __________________…if you will listen.
And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway your life will be filled with problems.
And if you try to follow somebody else’s pathway your life will be filled with problems.

2) WHY CAN’T I HEAR GOD’S VOICE?

1. Let me share with you several reasons why we struggle to hear God’s voice.

A. Busyness

If you’re always on the go and you can’t hear God, you are facing the barrier of busyness.
One of the main reasons we can’t hear God is b/c we don’t take time to hear God.
Our schedules are so full that we have no margin to get alone with Him & hear His voice.
Luke 10:38–42 AMP
38 Now while they were on their way, it occurred that Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha received and welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching. 40 But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]! 41 But the Lord replied to her by saying, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; 42 There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.
Luke 10:39–40 AMP
39 And she had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching. 40 But Martha [overly occupied and too busy] was distracted with much serving; and she came up to Him and said, Lord, is it nothing to You that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me [to lend a hand and do her part along with me]!
Martha is busy serving but Mary is at the feet of Jesus listening…and Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen that which was better.
Luke 10:38-40
NOTE: If you want to hear from God, you’ve got to allocate time to listen.
To cultivate an open mind so that you can hear from God, you’ve got to allocate time to listen. That means you’ve got to slow down. You’ve got to be quiet. You’ve got to put it in your schedule so you have time to hear God speak.
That means you’ve got to slow down.
You’ve got to put it in your schedule so you have time to hear God speak.
NOTE: If you don’t make time for God, there’ll be no time for God.
Psalm 46:10 MEV
10 Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
You will never know He’s God until you’re still long enough to know He’s God.
NOTE: God wants more than your leftovers and your spare moments.
We say, “God, I want to hear from you. But hurry up! I’ve only got five minutes!”
NOTE: God wants more than your leftovers and your spare moments.
He wants to be the center of your life…and the way that you prove He’s the center of your life is by allocating time to listen.
If you want to hear from God, you have to give Him more than 5 minutes of your time.
The quieter you become, the more you can hear.

B. Distractions/Competing Voices

You can’t hear God when your mind is crowded with thoughts, worries, fears, and plans.
Iow’s, we often miss what God is saying b/c we can’t shutdown our minds & clear our thoughts.
It’s also difficult to hear God if you always have the radio or TV on…or if you’re constantly on the internet or social media.
We live in a world that is constantly vying for our attention…and it’s easy to get distracted with all of the other voices shouting at us…but if you want to hear God’s voice, you will have to turn down the world’s volume.
NOTE: It’s easy to get distracted with all of the other voices shouting at us
Iow’s, turn off the tv, the radio, the computer, the cellphone…and get alone with God.
1 Corinthians 7:35 NLT
35 I am saying this for your benefit, not to place restrictions on you. I want you to do whatever will help you serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible.
To hear God, we have to eliminate the distractions.
1 Cor. 7
Hebrews 12:1 MEV
1 Therefore, since we are encompassed with such a great cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
Hebrews 12:1–2 NCV
1 We are surrounded by a great cloud of people whose lives tell us what faith means. So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back. 2 Let us look only to Jesus, the One who began our faith and who makes it perfect. He suffered death on the cross. But he accepted the shame as if it were nothing because of the joy that God put before him. And now he is sitting at the right side of God’s throne.
Hebrews 12:1 NCV
1 We are surrounded by a great cloud of people whose lives tell us what faith means. So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back.

C. Pride

C. Pride

C. Pride

If you think you don’t need God in your life and want to handle things yourself, you’re probably not listening for God to speak.
Pride keeps you from being open to the possibility that God might want to say something to you.
Pride will keep you doing things your way rather than listening to God & doing things His way.

D. Fear

A lot of people can’t hear God speak b/c they’re afraid to hear God speak.
Maybe you think that hearing God’s voice will make you some kind of religious fanatic.
Or maybe you’re afraid to hear from God b/c you’re afraid of what He might say.
Some people don’t want to hear God b/c they’re afraid of what He might say.
NOTE: Maybe you’re afraid that He will call you to ministry…or ask you to give up everything & move to a 3rd world country…so you would rather not hear Him speak.
But b/c of fear, you’re missing out on God leading you in your everyday life.

E. Lack of Openness

Too many people are closed to the possibility that God might want to speak to them.
Too many people don’t believe God will speak to them or expect God to speak to them.
You could be here today & you’re thinking that God doesn’t want to talk to you…so you have closed your mind to the possibility of hearing from God.
But if you belong to Him, He wants you to hear His voice…but you need to have a desire to hear Him.
What does that mean? It means you’ve got to be receptive. You’ve got to be willing. You’ve got to be open. You’ve got to be eager. You’ve got to be ready.

CONCLUSION:

You need toYou’ve got to be open. You’ve got to be eager. You’ve got to be ready.
The number one barrier to hearing God speak is resistance. So many people are closed to the possibility that God might speak to them. If you don’t think God can or will speak to you, guess what? He won’t.
“If God doesn’t speak today, then the greatest disservice we could ever do to people is tell them they could have a personal relationship with God.” (Dallas Willard)
1. We were created to be in a relationship with God.
He created us to fellowship with Him.
But there can be no relationship w/o two-way communication.
Iow’s, it’s not enough for us to talk to God…we must take the time to hear Him talk to us.
2. In the weeks to come, we’re going to learn how God talks to us & how we can learn to be led by the HS.
3. So, let’s pray today that God would help us to be able to hear Him more clearly.
Let’s pray!!!
