My destiny becomes clear in looking at my starting point as an image bearer
Image of God had a specific meaning in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
The king was the image of a god on earth.
if you wanted to honor the gods you honored the king.
If a king ruled over large regions, he would erect statutes/ images of himself to represent his rule a reign to those who could not see him.
This king was the mediator with the gods
With this background in mind, the original audience of Genesis 1:26-27 would hear that they were royalty and images of the true God.
They were made to have access to God.
This understanding seems to coincide with Exodus 19:6 and the New Testament similarity in 1 Peter 2:9.
The biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann says, “There is one way in which God is imaged in the world and only one: human-ness!”

The enemy has attacked the image and left us marred
Sin is the problem
Everything we do is for love.
Sin happens when we desire the wrong things or in loving the right things in a wrong way.
Sin is abiding in other things in order to find joy and significance
We can everything apart from Jesus but live
Life in Christ is not just a life-denying way.
It is the way to life.
Restoration of the image- this is why you are here and where you are headed.
Colossians 1:15
Romans 8:29
Jesus showed what real humanness looked like, dependent, obedient, humble, servant, doing the Father’s will.
This is what the horizon to which we are headed looks like- being restored back to humanness.
Christ came to restore this humnness back.
Christ in us takes on the work to restore us back.
Your uniqueness is realized even more as you become more and more like Him.
You don’t lose the uniqueness with which God made you.
The image of God in you has a specific manifestation that no one else can give.
We then live to do the good works that He has planned for us.
1 John 3:2
So what do we do with the mundane life as we are headed to this glorious destiny?
Boast in your weakness.
Our weakness and sinfulness is an invitation to come to God for strength.
We don’t have to live in shame.
Our failures don’t lead me to focus on our undoneness.
Glory in suffering
Over a sketch made idly to amuse a child, an artist may not take much trouble.…
But over the great picture of his life … he will take endless trouble—and would, doubtless, thereby give endless trouble to the picture if it [could feel].…
It is natural for us to wish that God had designed for us a less glorious and less arduous destiny; but then we are wishing not for more love but for less.
