Review of Week 1

1 Peter 3:7 ESV
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
Live with your wives in an understanding way.
Show her honor.
Have a great prayer life.
Let’s begin with a question...

Husbands, are you bringing glory to God in your marriage?

Are you acting and thinking in a way that shows your marriage is defined by biblical principles?
Are you taking the truth in the Word and living it out.
Knowing truth doesn’t matter unless you take and apply it to your life.
You could have the most fabulous meal placed in front of you, but unless you take, receive, and eat it, then it is going to waste.
You need to view Scripture as though it is a 5 Star meal prepared for you.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Husbands, you were created to lead!

The foundation for leadership is found in Scripture.

The order of creation establishes your leadership. (Genesis 1-2)
God declared the husband to be the leader. (Ephesians 5:23)
Ephesians 5:23 ESV
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
God has ordered things to be a certain way.
When we get things out of order, there will be trouble.

What is the Biblical view of leadership?

The context of this scripture is not marriage but ruling and leadership - it is absolutely the model for a husband’s leadership.
Matthew 20:25–28 ESV
But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Leadership is notlording it over them.”
“It shall not be so among you.”
Leadership is service and sacrifice.
Jesus uses the image of a servant & slave to describe service.
Giving up one’s life to describe sacrifice.
Would you describe your leadership as one of sacrifice of self or demanding your own way?
Do you make decisions based on what is best for your wife and marriage or for yourself?
Is your motive to please God or please yourself?
2 Cor 5:9 - “We make it our aim to please the Lord”.
If your leadership is anything less than service and sacrifice then it is not biblical.
It is not modeled after Christ.
Jesus was the greatest example we have of leadership.
Husbands, you were created to lead.
Be the leader God created you to be!
Serve her and lead her in every aspect of your relationship.
Physical and Spiritual

Husbands, love your wife.

Ephesians 5:25–33 ESV
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Paul bookends this passage with “Love your wives” & “love his wife as himself”.

Husbands are to love their wives sacrificially.

The love we give is to mimic the love of Christ.
“He gave himself up for her.” Eph 5:23
Real men think and act like Christ.
Husbands, if we are to love our wives biblically, then we must be prepared to sacrifice ourselves for her.
I don’t know what this means for you.

Real love is patterned after Christ’s love for us.

From Pastor/Counselor Brad Bigney on the role of husbands.
Love your wives:
First
We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)
Most
She is your best friend.
Sacrificially
Unmistakably
1 John 3:18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
In spite of faults.
Romans 5:8 - God demonstrates His own love toward us… while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Love your wife as your own body.

Verse 28
Treat your wife as you would yourself.
Love her with your actions.
Love her without bitterness.
Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh/embittered against them.
Why love your wife this way? Because it brings glory to God!
End with a verse of scripture and a question.
John 15:5 ESV
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
“apart from me you can do nothing.”
Husbands, you cannot fulfill your role without God’s help.
Without him you are a ship without a sail or motor. Drifting aimlessly.

Are you growing in the way you think and act like Christ?

You grow so you can:
learn about your wife.
love your wife.
lead your wife.
