For Ruth this was a day like that have not ever seen!
The last couple of months/years have been rough.

As I considered this passage I tried to imagine how Ruth must have felt that morning as she made her way to the field of a stranger.
She was new in Bethlehem.
She did not have the privilege of knowing which field belonged to whom.
She had no way of knowing who might be willing to show her kindness.
No doubt her heart was filled with anxiety and anticipation.
As we already discovered, a day that began with uncertainty would end with joy and abundance.
This is a wonderful testimony to the goodness and grace of God in our lives.
We too have likely encountered days much like this one.
We have all had those situations of anxiety and uncertainty in our lives.
Many times I have faced an uncertain situation and found God to be faithful in supplying my need.
I have experienced days that were filled with doubt and dread but ended with peace and victory.
It was on this day that she was blessed with handfuls of purpose.
I want to examine these verses and consider the facts associated with: Handfuls of Purpose.

After Ruth went back to continue her work, Boaz ordered his reapers to let her glean among the sheaves (not just picking up grain that they accidently dropped as they reaped) and not to “embarrass” her (v.15;
“reproach,” KJV; “insult,” NASB; “scold,” NEB; “rebuke,” NAB).
Moreover, they were to pull stalks from their bundles that had not yet been tied up by the women and leave them for her to pick up (v.16).
Boaz’s instructions were generous beyond the requirements of the law that allowed the gleaners in the fields only after the reapers had finished their work.
His actions showed that he already had a special interest in Ruth.
We have been barren for so long ----- look what God has done!

God had made provision for strangers to be allowed to glean among the corners of the field, reaping the leftovers of the harvest, but He had said nothing of an obligation to give them of the best.
Here Boaz had instructed the reapers to allow Ruth to glean even among the sheaves, that which had already been harvested.
He was in essence saying, “Let her reap wherever she pleases.”
Ruth may have known little about the God of Israel, but she was about to learn a profound lesson in His marvelous grace.
Even though she was unaware, God was working on her behalf.
His hand of grace was evident in her life.
To us that may seem coincidental, but we are assured that this was no accident.
Ruth hadn’t got lucky and stumbled upon a field that was owned by a compassionate and gracious man.
She was led there of the Lord.
He had already prepared the heart of Boaz to provide for Ruth even though he was unaware of God’s plan.
Her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, V.3.
Our lives are not set to run according to chance or circumstance.
We have a sovereign God who is in charge of our lives.
We may not recognize it or even be aware of Him, but He is working in our lives

ruth2.17
Ruth gleaned in the field till evening and then beat out what she had gleaned (i.e., she separated the grain from the chaff).
Her gleanings measured about an ephah of barley, about one-half to two-thirds a bushel (also estimated as twenty-nine to fifty pounds).
Such a large quantity could not have been acquired in a day by an ordinary gleaner.
It shows how Boaz’s instructions to his reapers aided Ruth and also how diligently Ruth had worked.
Since the ration of a male worker in ancient Mari was about one to two pounds of grain per day, Ruth probably gathered enough to last Naomi and her for several weeks
