Q: What wrong attitudes have you seen towards preaching over the years?
3 C’s: Criticism, cynicism and callousness
Paul’s preaching was criticized: 2 Corinthians 10:10
Q: What kinds of wrong preaching have you heard?
What made it wrong or ineffective?
In preparing for this discussion I ran across an interesting article on Christian Today.
It was “10 bad preaching habits that must be stopped.”
As I read over them I thought I am going to see how many of these I have done during this Sunday’s lesson, which I had already done…So see if you can count as I list them:
“The Ten: (1 Verbal Tics, (2 over-preparation, (3 Under-preparation, (4 Over-sharing (about family), (5 Going on too long, (6 Not preaching long enough, (7 Using bad PowerPoint, (8 Being tied to notes, (9 going on a bear hunt, (10 Using cheesy object lessons.”
Verbal Tic
So I have probably done all of those at one time or another but even today…you could argue around 5…however I think that some of these are ridiculous anyway and that number 9 is down-right stupid…because it acts as if going through scripture is not a good idea.
But notice how none of these things have anything to do with anything the bible says about preaching...
How do you think attitudes have changed towards preaching?
Q: What do you consider to be some good attitudes towards preaching?
Q: Besides just lecture have you seen any things done while preaching that helped the message get across?
In scripture you see God using object lessons (i.e.
Jeremiah and a clay pot, Elijah, Jesus using His surroundings…) miracles, plagues, etc...
In case we think God is not open to getting the message across in other ways.
Q: Why do you believe that God chose preaching to be the means to change people?
It gets His powerful word across to people.
His word is what holds the power.
Preaching is not just something that professional preachers do however.
Preaching is simply proclaiming the truth of God.
We are all supposed to be preachers.
I wonder if every christian saw themselves as a preacher if it would make a difference.
