John the Baptist is on the scene and he uses a name for the man in front of him that many did not understand and were probably curious about.
But John knew exactly what he said when he said “Behold the Lamb of God!” (2 times is a few verses)
Names of Jesus: Lamb of God, Bread of Life, Lord of Glory, Son of Man, Living Water, River of Life, Son of David, Savior, Messiah or Christ, you have some.
Interestingly enough, Jesus introduced us to His names through many stories.
When He healed on the Sabbath and was questioned by Jews, He introduced His judgement to them as the Son of God.
During a sermon after feeding the 5000 and then crossing over the and walking on water, Jesus tell the Disciples He is the Bread of Life, the Son of Man.
After they brought to Him one caught in adultery, He proclaimed “I am the Light of the World.”
What interests me, certainly all the names of Jesus, but a smaller personal interaction He had with the disciple.
You see we have said our Identity was stolen.
We said that evil lurks about us, seeking to devour.
My premise is, we are not who we were created to be.
Jesus reveals this to us.
Recognizing us for who we are to become, recognizing us for the worth God sees in us, He calls to Simon Bar-Johah.
Simon Bar Jonah.
Brother of Andrew, who was a disciple of John, they had met Jesus previously.
They had spoken to Him.
Andrew was curious.
Andrew wanted to get closer.
Andrew felt in his heart that something great was about to happen and he followed Christ.
Not as a disciple at first, but with great curiosity.
Who is this person, Jesus.
He appears to be more than the son of a carpenter.
Remember when you were dating.
Remember when you would try to find out the other persons schedule and kinda change you direction to be in the same hall, same lunch table, same walk after school?

When he found Jesus, and Jesus was displaying Messianic tendencies, he first found his brother Simon.
Come on man…the excitement in his voice, the sense of emergency!

Name calling is a big deal in a child’s world.
It hasn’t started at our gatherings yet, but it will.
Isn’t it interesting how your psych can be damaged by a name.
Kids are mean to one another.
they work from the part of the brain called the amygdala, and this is our emotion/survivor part.
You call me a name and i must call it back to protect myself.
Names injure.

Are you still the names the boys called you back in school?
Are you still the name your dad used against you, your ex wife, ex husband?
Are you suffering from the name your coach called you?
A teacher?
Are you stuck in the rut of a title Satan threw in your path?
You aren’t that person.
Verse
There is a new name for you.
A new identity Christ knows.
But why did Christ change his name?
Why, after looking at all Simon Bar-Jonah would do, would he call him, Cephas, Rock?
Jesus knows his nature
Jesus knows him intimately
Jesus consecrates him to His service.
Jesus consecrates you also.
Is
You see Jesus came with a mission.
He came to take all your old names, the name you were given when your identity was stolen and has give you a new name.
A name only He knows, revealed to you at the appropriate time.
To Abraham, he became Abraham, to Jacob, he became Israel, to Saul, the name Paul.
Changed in their position in the kingdom there is a new name, a new identity, the identity you were called to become in Christ Jesus.
Jesus son of Joseph was revealed to the people as the redeemer, the Lamb of God.
Peter, tripped up by Satan
Jesus calls him Simon...
Jesus refers back to Simon by his former name: Simon Bar-Jonah.
Three times Jesus says Simon Bar-Jonah, do you love me?
The one that failed God. the one who denied God, was asked three times to feed His sheep.
Jesus departs.
Simon Bar-Jonah is confronted by the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, and his identity is changed!
From that day forward, Simon Bar-Jonah was named Peter and never again referred to by his former self.
Acts 2:
He became the “ROCK” from then on.
You have a new identity in Christ.
Satan has schemed against you.
He stole our identity at the tree of good and evil.
Satan actively throws across your path items to trip you up.
But God.
He knows your real identity.
Story of new identity....
In the early 50’s a new pastor was called to a rural southern church.
There was a particular orphan girl who attended with her new family.
She was made to do the hard chores, stay with the horses during church services and tend to the dirty work of the family.

One particular Sunday after this new pastor had arrived, he noticed she crept into the back door of the church to be a part of the service.
She only wanted to belong.
Having no father, no mother, she had received several nicknames as you can imagine.
