John 3:3 ESV
Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
In honor of Billy Graham...
John 3:4 ESV
Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
John 3:5 ESV
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
We must have a rebirth of the spirit - a birth from above. Our spirits are dead to God
A spiritual birth, like a physical one, takes place at a particular point in time. Is there a specific point in time when you were born again?
A spiritual birth, like a physical one, takes place at a particular point in time. Is there a specific point in time when you were born again?

(1) Born from above by the Spirit, the word, and the blood

Born again by the Spirit through the word of God
John 4:13–14 ESV
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13-14
Titus 3:5 ESV
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
the washing of regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Spirit

(2) The vital signs of the new birth

(a) A new awareness of my sin
(b) A desire to stop doing evil things
(c) A new love for other believers
(d) A new desire to witness to others
(e) A new love for God’s word
(f) A new understanding our worth

(3) At salvation the spirit is reborn, but the soul still needs to be transformed, and the body dedicated to God.

John 3:6 ESV
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
2 Peter 1:4 ESV
by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
Romans 12:1 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
John 3:6
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
My spirit - the Holy Spirit indwells and we have fellowship with God. The conscience is a function of the spirit.
My spirit - the Holy Spirit indwells and we have fellowship with God
My soul - mind, will, emotions. Transformation of the soul is a process which comes from the continual filling of the Spirit and the daily washing of the word
My body - must be presented as a living sacrifice daily
Why do I still sin?
The soul needs to be under the control of the spirit which needs to be under the control of the Spirit and the word.
Sins committed in the body will have physical consequences on earth. For instance, Paul warns that if we do not thoroughly examine ourselves prior to partaking of communion, we will suffer weakness, sickness, and premature death (see ; see also ).
If we do not walk in obedience to God's Word, we will grieve the Holy Spirit. The person who chooses not to follow God's ways in his soul will experience the consequences of a defeated mind, will, and emotions.

(4) The spiritual growth of the spirit, soul, and body is called sanctification

1 Thessalonians 5:23 ESV
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
