Introduction

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eleven: The King’s Withdrawal (Matthew 14)

As we read our Bibles, we discover that there are two kinds of storms: storms of correction, when God disciplines us; and storms of perfection, when God helps us to grow. Jonah was in a storm because he disobeyed God and had to be corrected. The disciples were in a storm because they obeyed Christ and had to be perfected.

We must never judge God’s will on circumstances alone. (Good things -God’s will)

The Facts of Life ()

Matthew 14:22–24 NIV84
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

Jesus made them get into the Boat. There are things you must do to grow in your relationship with Christ. The storms of life are used to strength our faith and teaches us about God. The Disciples are told to get into the boat.
The Boat ride did not go well. The boat was Buffeted by the wind. One thing I want everyone to understand about the will of God.
and it was night.
Sometime you feel like your labor is not accomplishing anything.
Sometimes you feel everything is against you.
Sometimes you wonder where God is when storms arrive.
God is there! God Know! God Cares!

It was night (fourth watch, 3am-6am)
Death was not walking on the water, life was walking on the water.

Isaiah 43:2 NIV84
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
2 Corinthians 1:8 NIV84
8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.
Romans 8:34 NIV84
34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Do not Fear it, Faith it!

The Failures of Life ()

Matthew 14:28–31 NIV84
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
The New Park Street Pulpit Sermons, Vol. V Mr. Fearing Comforted (No. 246)

This is the reason why you doubt, because you are looking too much to the things that are seen, and too little to your unseen

fearing the wrong thing.
Fear turns into worship. Can you turn you fear into worship today?

The Focus of Life ()

Matthew 14:32–36 NIV84
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
you cannot focus on the facts
you cannot focus on the fears
you cannot focus on the failures
you cannot focus on the waves
you cannot focus on the wind
you cannot focus on the darkness
you must focus on Jesus.
