Peace with God
Throughout the centuries mankind has been seeking one thing—Peace with God.
Yet while mankind wants peace with God, mankind really wants a God that at some level can be controlled.
Mankind wants to be able to impress God in some way.
Mankind has had this desire to “please” God as long as pleasing God in someway can improve mankind’s situation.
In America, mankind has become so egocentric that there is the belief that God is “lucky” to have us.
After all I gave up an hour or two to be here at church this morning!
What more could God want?
If you don’t here anything else that is said this morning, I want you to hear this one thing.
It Is Not About You! IT IS ALL ABOUT GOD!
Justified through Faith
Today our passage is in Romans chapter 5.
If you have your Bibles, I want to encourage you to open it up and follow along as I read.
Romans 5:1-
The first thing I want you to notice is that our passage begins with the word, “therefore.”
Now you know whenever we see a “therefore” we need to stop and see what it is there for.
In this case it refers back up to .
There we read that, “God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”
There are two words that I want you to notice in these verses.
First is the word, “righteousness.”
God promises to credit the righteousness that Jesus has to us.
You are seen as though you are righteous!
The second word is, “justification.”
Because God declares you righteous you are see as justified!
You are seen just as if you had NEVER sinned!
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith we have peace with God . .
.”
This brings me to a major thought!
YOU CANNOT EARN PEACE WITH GOD!
Peace with God comes through faith in Jesus Christ through God’s grace (favor we do not deserve).
Rejoice in Hope!
We can rejoice in the hope that comes from knowing Jesus.
Hope that we will see Him face-to-face.
Hope that we will spend eternity with Jesus in Heaven.
Hope that we have been declared righteous.
Hope that comes from God Himself.
But we don’t only rejoice in hope.
Look at verse 3.
Rejoice in our Sufferings
Now we our sufferings.
How can that be?
No one in their right mind rejoices in sufferings.
Yet that is exactly what God calls us to do—rejoice in our sufferings.
Here’s why!
Suffering produces perseverance!
Some of your Bibles may say, patience, or endurance.
Nevertheless suffering produces our ability to keep on keeping on!
Perseverance produces character!
Character means we are becoming more like Jesus!
Character produces hope!
The more we are like Jesus the more hope we will experience!
And hope does not disappoint!
Because God has poured out His unconditional love into our hearts by giving us the Holy Spirit to be a permanent part of our lives!
Christ Died for the Ungodly
Now look with me at verse 6.
Romans 5:6-8
At just the right time
When we were powerless
When we were powerless
Paul wants to make sure we understand how strange this really was.
First he reminds us that we were ungodly.
Then he goes on to state that most people would not sacrifice their lives for a “righteous man” though some might sacrifice their life for someone better than they are; a “good man.”
But Jesus—he sacrificed His life while we were ungodly!
God’s Great Demonstration of Love!
The greatest demonstration of God’s love was the fact that we were still lost in our sin.
We were still rebellious, and actively going against God when Jesus died for us!
Free from God’s Wrath!
In verses 9-11 we are reminded that because of God’s great demonstration we are now free from God’s wrath because we have been reconciled—put into a right relationship with God—through the work of Jesus!
One Man Adam, One Man Jesus
Paul now completes his argument by showing how through one man—Adam sin came into the world and brought death—physical and spiritual—to all of mankind!
Now through one man—Jesus the forgiveness of sins is made available to all of mankind!
The gift is different from the consequence.
The consequence of Adam’s sin was universally applied to ALL of mankind, because have sinned (verse 12).
The gift of God—Jesus is for all men, and brings an abundance of God’s grace, and the gift of righteousness to those who will receive it (verses 16-7)
Conclusion
Today, we’ve learned that you cannot earn God’s favor.
tells us that all of our righteous acts are like filthy rags.
We cannot clean up our lives and make them good enough to be acceptable to God.
Everyone of us comes to God in the same way, by faith in Jesus!
I did not do anything to deserve God’s love, I received it as a gift.
I did not deserve to have Jesus die for me.
It was a gift from God; a demonstration of His unconditional love.
The truth is, I was powerless to do anything to get God’s attention.
It is, and always has been all about God!
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless . . .
But God!
But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christs died for us!
