Christians must be ready and willing to follow the leading of the Lord and share the Gospel with others. How? Steps

Notes & Transcripts

Mature believers pray, worship, Bible study…we all agree. But evangelism...
Evangelism- such a frightening thing for Christians
Coworker, family
As Christian’s we have been changed
When we are excited about something, we want to tell others.
Story of sharing with Hillary’s granny
We can be frightened and turned off from sharing

As Christian’s we have been changed by the Lord and we should be excited about it.
Along with being excited about it, we have been commanded to tell others about Jesus
We know we are to share the Gospel with others
Matthew 28:19 CSB
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:19
How? Steps...
Acts 1:8 CSB
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Christians must be ready and willing to follow the leading of the Lord and share the Gospel with others.
We know we are to share the Gospel with others, but something happens between knowing it and actually doing it.
How? Steps...

1. Listen to the Spirit (vv. 26-30)

EXP: Philip listened to the Spirit. 2 commands- Get up and go south; go and join that chariot.
ILL: Talking at basketball games. Can’t hear one another because it’s so loud.
APP: How many of us can’t hear the Holy Spirit because of the noise in our lives? Busyness, sin, failure to be growing in the Lord. The Spirit wants to prompt us in having conversations with people but or can’t hear Him.
Or you don’t want to hear Him. Tuning God out doesn’t change what you’ve been commanded to do.
ILL: Calories in pizza (I love pizza, so sometimes I just ignore how many calories it is). Doesn’t change it
ILL: Tuning people out
APP: Tuning God out doesn’t change what you’ve been commanded to do. You have been commanded to tell others about Jesus. You must obey him. Philip had many excuses he could have given- it was out of the way, the man was important, the chariot was moving. Philip wanted to obey the Spirit so much, he literally chased down a chariot. Imagine that scene.
Pray for the Spirit to lead you- Spirit helps in many ways in regard to evangelism:
With us at all times
Gives hope, peace, and strength
Convicts the lost
Gives wisdom
Provides understanding of God’s Word, to us and to those we are sharing
Guides and directs us to specific events
Gives confidence over fear
Guides us in our words when we speak about God
Since the Holy Spirit does these things, I’m convinced that one of the biggest, if not the biggest, reason we don’t live lives of ongoing evangelism is because we are not being lead by Him.

2. Engage a Conversation (vv. 30-34)

EXP: Philip began the conversation. When the Spirit is leading, you will find that people are ready to have conversations with you.
ILL: At Baxter’s this week- struck up conversations with people by talking about parking and asking someone if they were from Somerset.
APP: Not everyone has the ability or personality to go door to door evangelizing. But, that’s no excuse to forgo evangelism. If you have a mouth and a relationship with Jesus, then you have what it takes to share the Gospel.

3. Share the Good News (vv. 35)

So many people think, “If I live my life a certain way then people will automatically know about Jesus.”
EXP: Literally, “Philip, having opened his mouth, told him the good news...” Philip opened his mouth. So many times we think the Gospel will be shared by people looking at us. Watch me open this door for others, give money to charity, go to church…the Gospel won’t preach itself.
Matthew 5:16 CSB
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
ILL: Dentist sees someone needs a root canal. They are unaware. He decides to show them how to live healthily and brush their teeth. If they became inspired to live more healthily, it doesn’t help their current situation.
APP: It takes WORDS to convey the message. Our Christian walk does not replace our talk, it validates it.
Why you? Can’t I just invite someone to church? Aside from the fact that the Lord has commanded every believer to make disciples (), you have 3 unique qualities that I nor any other person on this earth has:
1. Unique Circle of influence. The Lord has commanded you to tell others. Could it be that God has put you in that office with your coworker, in your family with someone, on that plane seat next to that individual, your child on the sports team with that other child’s parents to share the good news about Jesus with them?
2. Unique Personality. God wants to use your gifts, interests, and abilities to build bridges and relationships with others with whom you can share.
3. Unique Story of how God is working in your life. That struggle God helped you through. That miracle He worked in your life. That time you trusted Him and He proved Himself trustworthy. The way you are growing and changing by reading and obey His word.
Use your unique personality, in your unique circle of influence, to share your unique story of how God is working in your life.
So when you get to the point in a conversation where you want to tell someone how to be saved, what do you say?
ABCs of salvation

4. Watch the Lord Work (vv. 36-40)

EXP: Philip saw the Lord work in this official’s life.
APP: God will work through you staying faithful to tell others about Jesus. People may not make decisions right away, but seeds will be planted.
ILL: Disciple Now weekend, kids were saved a few days/weeks after
Isaiah 55:11 CSB
so my word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.”
APP: When we are faithful to share God’s word with others, He is faithful to accomplish His will with it.
When we are faithful to share God’s word with others, He is faithful to accomplish His will with it.
You must hold up your end, to be faithful to share His Word.
