Introduction

The Lord’s Supper is a time to be encouraged to keep going on with Christ.

Holding Fast to the Word of Christ

Must - this is what has to occur.

This is what ought to occur.

Pay closer attention - hast fast, this word was used often to describe holding a ship on course as it was coming into port.

Why do we need to hold fast?

Lest we drift away - This referred to the flow of a river.

If you are not working against the flow away from Christ, you will drift away from him.

Why?

The Word of Christ is Greater than the Old Covenant

For since the message declared by angels proved reliable - The word that we mediated by angels or God’s messengers was shown to be valid.

Why the reference to angels.

Angels were involved in the giving of the Ten Commandments.

And every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution -

Transgression - overstepping the bounds of established law

Disobedience - refusal to take heed or to listen to someone

Received a just retribution - got a justified or proper payment or return

How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

How shall we escape - Escape what?

The wrath of God and his judgment at the Day of the Lord.

If we neglect - suggests a gradual unthinking movement away from the faith

Such a great salvation - The is the so excellent deliverance

What is so excellent or great about it?

The Person of Christ:

The Final Word from God

The One Who is the Effulgence of God and the Son of God and it our Redeemer

The One Who is Served and Worship by Angels

The One Who is the Lord of Creation

The Word of Christ is Greater Because of the Affirmation

It was declared at first by the Lord - Jesus was the One who preached his excellencies most clearly first.

It was declared at first by the Lord -

And it was attested to us by those who heard - This is a clear reference to the Apostolic band who first heard the truth and confirmed that it was what it claimed to be.

The confirmed it by delivering it as the Word of God.

And it was attested to us by those who heard -

While God also bore witness by sign and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will - God testified to the truthful of the message preached by the Apostles by acting in a supernatural way by the power of the Holy Spirit.
