The Lord’s Day
There was a specific day set aside for worship.
Why the first day?
-It is what was referred to as the Lord’s Day
-
-
This was on Sunday
It was a day that was set aside for worship
“when the disciples came together”…this is something that was expected.
It wasn’t something that was an occasional meeting but something that they regularly did.
The Lord’s People
There was a specific group of people that met together
“Disciple” here means not what we think of when we hear disciple.
It is not referring to the 12 or to those that were like the 12
-Disciple means “pupil”…or a student.
By that definition we are all disciples.
No matter what level your spiritual walk you are a disciple.
I would propose that at some level even the seeker is a disciple in that they are learning and seeking after Jesus.
The Lord’s Table
There was a specific purpose for their meeting
-The text here does not give specific mention to what we would refer to as communion but...
-It was common for the early church to meet, share a meat and then celebrate the Lord’s Supper as a part of their worship
-How often they met is unclear but they meet regularly and on the first day of the week.
The Lord’s Message
There was a specific message.
The message was shared by preaching…by oral presentation.
-
There NEEDS to be oral proclamation of the gospel.
-We are, as some have proposed, the only gospel some will read or hear.
-But salvation comes by hearing an oral presentation of God’s Word…the gospel message that brings one to salvation and reconciliation is one that is verbally shared.
There idea that behavior that is contrary to Biblical truth can hinder the gospel has validity…but ultimately even our behavior cannot hinder God’s purpose.
In reality, we affirm our gospel presentation in our behavior
The Lord’s Comfort
Through the power of God Paul was able to bring this young man back to life.
If the church experiences comfort it is through the power of God
Whatever the trial or test…if the church is able to comfort one another it is through God’s power.
Do you see a common theme in this passage?
The focal point of all that Paul…and the early church did was the Lord
This verse follows Paul admonishing the church for how they are behaving at the Lord’s Table.
What is lawful and what is not.
Paul concludes the matter with the statement… “do all to the glory of God”
-If you remember, that Greek word all refers to “ALL”
-It carries the sense of wholeness…do the whole to the glory of God.
-This is the same word and sense we find in
The wholeness of the power given to Jesus Christ is the same wholeness that we are to glorify Him.
To Paul everything boiled down to glorifying God.
-As we have seen in Acts thus far, even Paul’s own personal safety was secondary to the glory of God.
-Pauls own “success” was secondary to the glory of God
-For Paul, everything was secondary to the glory of God.
-In the Olympics the silver medalist is often times the least happy, why is that
The goal is not second place…the goal is GOLD
This brought me to a question in my own life that I would challenge you to ask yourself.
What
In my life…or in your lives…who or what would get the Gold?
If anyone beside Jesus Christ gets the gold we ought to check our priorities
If anyone or anything in the church gets the gold besides Jesus Christ the church ought to check it priorities.
