TITLE: The Comfort of the Cross
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
(, ESV)
BODY:
We have sorrow today because of the Sting of Death and Sin.
God’s Word tells in that God created a world of untold beauty and harmony.
Everything worked together as it should have.
Everything was in perfect unity.
There was no death, there was no pain, there was no sorrow.
But God’s perfect world was marred by sin.
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— (, ESV)
Because of sin, Mrs. Billie now lays before us.
Because of sin, death touched her life.
This was not God’s plan, it was not his design, but in moments like these we are reminded that death is inevitable.
We cry today because we feel the unnaturalness of death, we are keenly aware that something is not right about this, that there is a wrongness about this.
You see, we were created for eternity, but traded in eternity for cheap trifles.
But the Bible does not leave us there, instead it gives us great hope.
Despite the fact that we deserve death and the separation that it brings, we find in the pages of this passage that this is not the end.
Where we have sorrow in this moment,
We have joy today because of the Cross of Christ.
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
(, ESV)
Because of the cross of Christ we who were the enemies of God have been reconciled to him!
When sin came into the world things that were once meant for our health, our good were marred by it.
Mrs. Billie’s body turned against her racking her with pain and suffering.
Despite that, the cross of Christ marked her life with great love and joy.
I remember Uncle Billie from thanksgiving dinners at Aunt Betty’s and the few Chitterling boils I was able to attend.
He always had a great sense of humor, and He loved her church and Her Lord.
We have hope for tomorrow because of the promise of Her resurrection.
Praise God today, for those who are in Christ have great joy because they have the promised resurrection.
One day, God will set right what has been made wrong by sin.
One day God will burn this world up and roll it up like a scroll and he will restore it, renewed like a shining jewel.
There will be no more death, no more pain, no more sorrows, no more goodbyes.
Billie has already begun to taste the glory of that promise.
Right now, Billie is no longer in any pain.
He is no longer suffering.
Right now, Billie is healed and whole.
There is no more suffering, no more pain.
He is being reunited with her father and mother who he loved so much.
Right now he is reuniting to friends lost, friends who knew Christ and who went before her.
He is reunited with the Christ who loved her so!
But I know today, that if Billie was here, there is one reunion is hoping for, praying for.
That is the reunion he may one day have with you.
I say may because that reunion will only happen with those who are in Christ.
Today, let me ask you a question, “Do you know Christ Jesus as your Lord and savior?”
If Billie were here, he wouldn’t be worried about the bowling alley parking lot, he wouldn’t be concerned with her home.
Her only concern would be that he would see you again someday in the glory that he is now experiencing.
But that will only happen through the grace that comes in Christ Jesus.
Do you need Jesus today?
