Romans 5:12–21 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. 20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We have now come to the very basis of Justification. On man’s part we have found that faith secures it.
for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We have now come to the very basis of Justification. On man’s part we have found that faith secures it.
So man does play a role in his justification.
And on God’s part his grace provides it.
However one must go one step further to see that justification joins to Christ.
All that man is have been affected by the prior relationship to the first Adam.
Reminder him?
Now by a new relationship to the last Adam (Christ) certain benefits comes.
This passage of scripture set forth the two men who affect the lives of every man that has ever lived and everyone who will every live.
Through the first Adam sin entered into the world and death by sin.
James 1:15 NASB95
15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death
Here we find two principles reigning over man, the principle of sin and death.
Every man has sinned and every man must die.
This fact takes one directly to the head of the human race where it all began.
Man is not a solitary individual unaffected by the society and ancestry.
Rather man is a corporate being very much affected by the first man through whom has come certain principle that operate in his life.
Now if sin and death come through the first man, cannot justification of life come through a man?
The thesis of this passage is this: as man’s relation to Adam never fails to bring death on account of his one sin, so the believer’s relation to Christ cannot fail to secure justification of life on the account of Christ’s one righteous act at the cross. Dr. Carroll Thompson

A) Sin entered the earth by one man.

As Adam stood as head of the human race, now Christ stands as head of a new creation.
Sin and death came through Adam, and Righteousness and life come through Christ.
Quick question.
If through the first man Adam, death came. And the second man Adam life came. Why then do people still die?
Romans 5:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Why then do people still die?
Verse 12
“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world”
The word sin is ham-ar-tia which is the singular refers to the principle of sin, sins. When it plural it is the acts of sin.
Paul treats sin as a principle that works in the flesh of man even as death works in the body.
The body is born of adam and takes the characteristics of adam.
Spiritual principles can be transmitted as well as physical traits. No one can deny that ‘death has passed upon all men. The next part… all sinned.
Sin in the singular is the root; sins, plural are the fruits.
The word “world” here is the word kosmos which refers to the sum total of all being above the level of animal.
Were animal affected by the sin of Adam.\
Were animal affected by the sin of Adam?
Sin enter the world through disobedience
Romans 5:19 NASB95
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners
5:19
For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners
1. Disobedience results from careless listening.
2. Disobedience brought transgression.
Man shall live by “every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God,
Matthew 4:4 NASB95
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
Failure to live by the Word is disobedience.
Failure to live by the Word is disobedience.

B) Sin entered the world through one man’s transgression

Romans 5:15 NASB95
15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
Verse 15
For if by the transgression of the one the many died
Transgression literally means “falling alongside,” transgression is a deviation from the path, violation of the known will of God.
1. Through the transgression of one “the many” died.
Romans 5:15 NASB95
15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
2. Through one transgression “the resulted condemnation to all men.”
Romans 5:18 NASB95
18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
3. Judgment “arose from one transgression.”
Romans 5:16 NASB95
16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.
Through one transgression came death, condemnation and judgment upon all men. Sin came into the world.

c) sin has reigned in death over man since Adam.

Romans 5:12–14 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
Romans 5:21 NASB95
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Sin reigned is to say was king, ruled, obtain royal power and also death has reigned as a king over man.
And also death has reigned as a king over man.
This death refers to both physical and spiritual death. In Pauls writing death is thought of as a person. This was also a common concept among the Jews. O death where is your sting
Death did not exist before adam and was not apart of God plan for mankind.
1. Death came through sin.
2. Death has come upon all men through one man
3. Death has reigned as a monarch. death reigned through the one.
C)
Romans 5:17 NASB95
17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
ro 5:
4. Men do not die because of their own personal sins.
Romans 5:14 NASB95
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
5. Death is because of son not sins committed by each individual.
Death as a principle and power has reigned over man. Every man conceived is born with the seed of death. Death is a spiritual principle that results in physical death.
(in the day that you eat of this fruit you shall surely die.) gen. 2:17

D) Through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners.

For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners.
Romans 5:19 NASB95
19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
1. One man’s disobedience caused something to happen to all men.
2. One man’s disobedience caused “the many” to become sinner.
3. For this reason all sinned or because.
“One cannot deny the effect of one man’s disobedience. He being the first man from whom all other descended, released into the world sin and death which has established its destructive work in the flesh of man.” Dr. Carroll Thompson
Sin has reigned as a monarch over man.

E) Righteousness can though one man

Adam was a type of the one to come
Romans 5:14 NASB95
14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
ro
1. As through Adam sin and death came upon the human race, so through Christ comes righteousness and life.
2.
3. sin and death came upon the human race, so through Christ comes righteousness and life.
2. As the descendants of Adam bear the mark of his race, so do those born of god bear the charter of Christ.
3. As son and death reign through one, so shall all those in one reign in life.
Romans 5:17 NASB95
17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ
Through One comes the justification of life.
1. Justified shall reign in life though the one.
2. Justification brings one into the life of God.
3. The reign of grace through righteousness results in life.
Though one man death has reigned over all, now through one man life has reign in righteousness.
Through One has come the gift of Grace
Romans 5:15 NASB95
15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
Romans 5:17 NASB95
17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:20 NASB95
20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
ro 5:20, 21
Romans 5:21 NASB95
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
ro5: 21
In the Biblical context grace is unmerited favor.
Righteousness is a gift of GOd’s grace
This gift comes through One Man’s act of righteousness
If many died by the transgression of one, much more the free gift has abounded to many .
Where condemnation and judgment came out of the offence, the gift of grace has come out of many transgressions unto justification.
Where death has reigned through one transgression, those who receive this gift shall reign in life through One.
Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,
Grace will reign “through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Righteousness establishes the reign of grace.

F) Through One Man’s obedience many were made righteous.

The act of obedience refers directly to His death on the Cross.
One Man’s obedience caused “the many” to become righteous.
Justification came through One Man.
